Daniels stayed flat as shattered glass rained down. Everything went quiet, and he lifted his head. “Rem?” He saw his partner lying on the ground beside Lozano’s desk.

Rem raised his head and shook the glass out of it. “I’m okay. You?”

“Fine. How’s Lozano?”

Rem stayed low and moved forward through the glass. Daniels did the same, trying not to get cut. Raised voices could be heard from the other room.

Rem scooted up and Daniels came up beside him. Lozano lay on his belly.

“Captain?” asked Rem.

Lozano grunted.

Footsteps sounded, and Daniels heard crunching glass. Daniels recognized the two detectives who ran in with their weapons pulled. One was Mellenbuehl and the other Georgios. Others ran up behind them. “What the hell happened? You guys okay?” asked Mellenbuehl.

Daniels stayed down. “Shots fired. Outside the window. Don’t know from where. Lozano’s down. Get an ambulance.”

Lozano mumbled. “I’m okay.” He reached for his head.

“Shit.” Mellenbuehl pulled back, looking out the window.

“I’ll contact Shorty. Clear and check the area.” Georgios ran off, keeping his head down.

Rem patted the Captain’s arm. “Captain. It’s Remalla. Can you hear me?”

Lozano raised his head, and Daniels could see a trickle of blood running down Lozano’s cheek.

“I’m not deaf, Remalla. Yeah, I can hear you.”

Rem coughed. “He can’t be too injured. He’s still grumpy.”

Daniels inched forward. “Are you hit, Captain? There’s blood.”

Lozano, his face sweaty, tried to sit up. “I think it’s just a crease. Bastard barely missed.”

“Take it easy,” said Rem. “Stay down.”

They sat up along with Lozano, staying under the bottom of the window.

Mellenbuehl peered in. “Ambulance is coming. We’re checking outside. Can you guys make it out?”

“Give us a sec, Mel,” said Daniels, his voice shaky.

“I don’t need an ambulance,” said Lozano, holding his head.

“You’re bleeding, Cap. You need to get it checked,” said Rem. He held his hand, pulled on something, and grimaced.

“You hurt?” asked Daniels.

“Piece of glass in my hand. Nothing serious.” He leaned his head against the wall. “You think he’s gone?”

Daniels dusted glass off of his pants, careful not to get cut. “He ought to be, unless he wants to be found. The entire building is going to be out looking for him.”

“Shit. That was close,” said Rem. “If the Cap hadn’t bent down for that pen…”

“Yeah. I know,” said Daniels.

“I’m in the damn room,” said Lozano. “And how do you know I was the target?”

“You’re the one who’s hurt,” said Daniels.

Lozano pulled his bloody hand back.

“You probably need stitches, Cap,” said Rem.

“And you need a haircut, but I don’t see you getting one,” griped Lozano. “And I wasn’t the only person in this room. He could have been targeting any one of us.”

Rem sighed, and Daniels closed his eyes.

“Looks like Massey and Yang’s odds just improved,” said Rem. “Although I think Yang’s the front runner.

“Don’t forget Maia Chambers. She’s not off the list yet either,” said Daniels.

Lozano pulled out a handkerchief and held it over his injury. “Looks like you two have more work to do.”
