The agents walked back into the field office. The morning sun shining hotly on their backs was cut off suddenly by the quiet whoosh of the automatic doors. The atmosphere inside the lobby of the field office was cool and utterly dehydrated by the industrial air conditioning unit that ran around the clock.

As the agents headed through the corridor towards the infirmary, they nearly bumped into the doctor coming around the corner. She started back with a sharp inhale, then adjusted her glasses as she recognized Lexi and Casler.

“Ah!” the doctor said, “Just the agents I was hoping to see. I assure you, Dr. Quinn, I have not forgotten about our agreement to let you know first when the patient is cleared for interrogation. As a matter of fact, I was about to call you this very minute.”

“What’s the prognosis?” Lexi asked intently.

“The patient’s head trauma is mild,” the doctor replied in a clinical tone of voice, looking down at the clipboard she carried in her left hand, “He suffered a very minor concussion with no serious lasting damage to the brain or skull. In his current condition, I would say he should hold up fine under interrogation, although I would advise against using the spot-lamp method until he’s had a few more days to recover. His eyes may still be somewhat photosensitive.”

“We may not have a few days,” Lexi said darkly, “We’ll keep the lights low. I’ve never relied on such barbaric intimidation tactics anyway.”

“What about his amnesia routine?” Casler asked, folding his arms across his broad chest and tucking in his chin like a boxer, “Is he still keeping up that story?”

“He is,” the doctor said, “and, to be entirely honest, I’m not so sure it is just a story. Amnesia – particularly Global Amnesia, as the patient’s symptoms would suggest – is one of the least understood and most commonly miscategorized phenomena in the medical world today. It’s inherently difficult to study because it can have such varied causes, durations, and symptoms.”

"And yet it's so easy to fake," Casler replied grimly, "and a convenient get-out jail-free card if you don't want to get caught in a lie."

“In my professional medical opinion,” the doctor said, pushing up her glasses again with a slight sniff, “it would take a lot of dedication to hold up an act of total memory loss for as long and as completely as this patient has.

“We’ll just see about that,” Lexi replied, grinding her teeth, “I want that suspect in the interrogation room in ten minutes. And make sure the lights are dimmed. We need to find out once and for all if Theo Cirillo is our man. We can’t risk a seizure over extending our time line.”
