Chapter Twenty
THE MINUTES
SOME FOLKS
SAVE THROUGH SPEED
THEY NEVER EVEN
LIVE TO NEED
âBurma-Shave
âSo,â Donna said Saturday morning after theyâd been served a breakfast of smoked salmon omelets, fresh fruit, and an assortment of pastries, âwhere to from here?â
âL.A. Iâve got some business in the area.â
âYouâre kidding. You should try to squeeze in some time at the flea market in Pasadena tomorrow.â
âItâs already on my list, since my business dealings arenât till Monday. Iâve never been there.â
âNever? Iâm going there, too. Tell you what: Why donât you find me? Iâll be there all day. Then, afterward, you could come out to the house for dinner.â Her tone switched from excited to apologetic. âI assumed you wanted comÂpany, and I shouldnât have.â
âNo, it sounds great.â
âIâd take you to a nice restaurant or something tonight, but I already have plans.â
âThanks, but thereâs no need to baby-sit me. I thought tonight Iâd check in on one of the woodie club gatherings.â
âSounds fun.â
âI have to admit that Iâve never been to a woodie event, and you can lay odds that my grandfather never took the car to one. Now, my father? Who knows what Mercyââ
âMercy?â
âI know, itâs a weird nickname that I think his sister gave him.â
âYou called him that, too?â
âNo.â Did I? I donât remember. âI donât think so. My parents died when I was eight, and I recently learned some things that have me thinking about them more than usual. Iâm probably boring you, though.â
âNot at all. Youâve learned more about them?â
He wasnât about to tell her that theyâd been criminals. âI guess they went through a sort of rebellious phase. It shouldnât surprise me that I never knew: my grandfatherâwho raised meâwas so old-school that he obviously made sure I didnât know that my father, his son, had strayed from convention. That wouldâve been completely unacceptable in his eyes.â
âA true patriarch?â
âHe was.â
âWas he good to you growing up?â
âOh, sure. Stricter than most, I suppose. But my aunt tried to make sure I had a normal childhood, even though she was more like a grandmother; several years older than my father.â
âI see now,â Jeff continued, âthat it mustâve been exÂtremely difficult for my grandfather to watch his only sonâwhom heâd raised to carry on the Talbot nameâstray so far from convention.â
âYouâre pretty open about it.â
âIâm sorry, Iâm probably making you uncomfortable.â Heâd used it as a tactic to get her to open up, without realizing that he mustâve needed to put his thoughts into words.
âNot at all. Itâs rather intriguing. I just meant that you obviously need to talk about it. How is it that you only reÂcently found out about this âphaseâ they went through?â
âMy car was wrecked, and while Tony was restoring her, he found a sort of time capsule.â Jeff chose the photo from his wallet and handed it to the woman. âThis was in the door panel.â
She glanced at the photo, seemed to stifle a gasp by clamping her hand over her mouth. She looked out the window where their cars were parked.
