Summary

The history of adult education is complex. There is no one way to tell the whole story. Similarly, there is no one perspective on the history of adult education. Tracing the history of adult and continuing education is not the simple tracing of an organization or institution such as the school. It involves multiple kinds of organizations, perspectives, individuals, and methods. This chapter has introduced the issues and has chosen a thematic organization. There are numerous alternative approaches. What is important to understand is that the state of adult education today is the result of myriad influences.

As you develop your own understanding of the field, it is important to situate yourself and your work historically. You need to do this, not because it is important to understand history or because we need to glorify the past, but because it is important to understand the variety and richness of the field and the multiple ways of understanding it and your work.
