I took a day to recover but was in the office early the next, catching up on the admin I’d missed. Lilith floated over, and we chatted about clients and the changeling who’d vanished, and how she’d been alerted to their presence by the kitchen witch who ran the cafe we met at. We went back there for lunch. Work reasons, of course—not because of the food or coffee. We were professionals.

“Got some info on that lycan you wanted tracked,” Lilith said while we waited for our order to arrive. “Duke. He mentioned in an interview, I may or may not have illegally accessed, that he had brothers who’d come after him and get revenge. I can give you the transcripts if you want, but that’s the gist of it.”

A chill went through me. “Names?”

“Nothing I can pronounce, and nothing like your friend’s.”

It was still more than I’d had. And it made me feel no better. I put it aside that afternoon, did the rounds, and went with Arthur to The Playground. He didn’t have a gi, but he did have a cast.

He couldn’t have trained anyway, although I suspected the cast was mostly for show. He was his usual too-pleasant, sickly-sweet self, which was better than his sulky-child self. I was even treated to some vague ideas of what he’d like to do with the coven one day—a Head Witch and Wizard to rule them all.

And the way his eyes lingered on me made me quite confident I could buy a lottery ticket into this nebulous future he was conjuring up.

Arthur was a dirtbag wizard who was mismanaging lycans. I thought of the way my whole body turned liquid when Beo had waited for me to take what he’d offered.

Arthur was nowhere in my future plans except, perhaps, SuperSec.

When we got to training, I was greeted warmly by the lycans. Arthur was completely ignored. I did as I always did, stripping out of my shoes and socks over my bag, pulling off my pants and rolling into my gi pants, and Arthur, on the chair beside me, half-choked.

I pretended not to notice, just did the tie at my waist and pulled off the knitted sweater I’d worn to work. He goggled at the sport bra I had on like he hadn’t seen anything like it before. I was pretty sure that’s what he goggled at, anyway, though my weird belly button could’ve been the target of that shock, too. Nope, definitely the bra, or its contents. I was tempted to ask him, ‘Did I steal your breath, King?’ But I kept it to myself, kept my face in its normal lines as I shrugged into my gi top, taking off my earrings and rings and stowing them.

“No knitting, Arthur?” Beo asked, wandering over. His expression said the question was an idle one. The furious look Arthur shot Beo, and the way his hand tightened on the messenger bag that held his wand, made my eyes narrow, but Beo had already turned to me.
