Chapter Six

Sarah let the spray of the shower wash away the day’s grime. The kids and Morgan were watching television and she planned to join them. But first she wanted to be clean. What she’d really like to do was put on something nice for a change, rather than jeans.

But if she walked into the living room in anything other than jeans, the kids would comment. She never wore anything but jeans and tee shirts around the house. Damnit.

Well, she thought, toweling her hair dry, she could at least put on a little makeup and perfume. She picked up the bottle that read, in bold, red slashes, “Entice.”

“Yeah, Entice.” Good name. Good idea. But just so she wouldn’t be too obvious, she only put on a dab here and there. Mustn’t forget there.

When she entered the living room a few minutes later, she took the vacant spot on the couch next to Angie, who sat beside Morgan. Angie still rarely spoke to him, but at least she’d stopped shying away every time he got near. And she didn’t mind when he touched her.

Sarah could understand that. She didn’t mind when he touched her either. She tried to concentrate on the Disney movie the kids were so absorbed in, and halfway succeeded.

Then Morgan yawned and stretched and draped his arm along the back of the couch. A moment later she felt his fingers in her hair. She glanced at him, but his gaze was trained on the television. A moment later she nearly moaned aloud when he stroked the side of her neck with one callused finger. Goose bumps raced down her arms. She tried to rub them away.

“Cold?”

She turned toward the low sound of his voice. His hand cupped the back of her neck as their gazes met and held. “No,” she whispered. Not on your life.

He smiled a slow, sensual smile as though he’d read her thoughts.

An instant later the spell was broken when Angie flopped her head in Sarah’s lap and her feet in Morgan’s.

After the movie Sarah puttered in the kitchen for a few minutes to give the kids time to get in bed. When she went up to tell them good night, Morgan was right behind her. He followed her back downstairs.

Now what was she supposed to do?

She stopped in the middle of the darkened living room. He stopped, too, mere inches behind her. She could feel the heat from his body, hear his breathing. Her heart raced in anticipation.

“I hope you’ve got one of those left for me.”

His deep voice sent waves of awareness and longing washing over her. “One of those what?”

He took her hand and turned her toward him. “One of those good night kisses.”

This was it then. The moment she’d been waiting for all day. All her life. If he wasn’t going to kiss her, she was sure enough going to kiss him. “I might have one left over. Or two.”

She glided into his arms. It was where she was meant to be.
