When it comes to trends, I have rotten timing. Take marriage. Two or three years earlier, before I went to Wisconsin, getting married right after college was an acceptable option. Getting married during college was daring and sexy, the early sixties equivalent to living in sin. But what did I do? I married during college in the late sixties just as my entire peer group shed all outmoded, lawful rituals. I married fast and I married young and instead of setting a trend I became the last link to a dying civilization. In the process, however, I managed to spite Maxine which helped my marriage prosper for a time. But nothing lasts forever, least of all a union founded on spiting your mother.
When I telephoned long distance from Madison and told her the exciting news she went into a tizzy, which I found eminently satisfying.
âWhat do you want to do that for?â she gasped.
âIâm in love.â
âYou idiot,â she said. âSo are we all.â
What did she mean by that? âMother, heâs wonderful, so exciting, brilliantââ
âIs he Jewish?â
âOf course.â
âNo âof courseâ about it. In these times you never know. Rachel Grubhart brought home a schvartzer last week. Gave her mother a stroke.â
âToo bad. Whereâs Elliot?â
âThey sent him to Vietnam. He took along a dozen cases of water-pack tuna and six cartons of matzoh. I donât think the jungle is particularly kosher.â
âI canât imagine him in Vietnam. Do you think they have Seders there?â
âI always thought youâd marry someone local,â Maxine pressed on. âSomeone from around here.â
âWhyâd you think that? You mean Elliot?â The image of Elliot and me grappling in the bushes made me wonder just what Iâd given up by being a renegade Jew.
âNo,â she said, âbut maybe someone like Danny Hundt.â
âGood Lord, whereâd you dredge up Danny? Didnât they move away years ago?â
âWay out on the Island. Think of all that pet food money â¦â
âIâd never marry anyone who finked out on me. Danny wouldnât take responsibility for the lung.â
âThat lung,â my mother sighed tearily. âYour father should only be here for this.â
âIâm sure heâd like Howard very much,â I said defensively.
âHoward?â my mother said absently. âWhoâs Howard?â
âMy fiancé. I wrote to you about him. Howard Tuttman. Heâs in my year. His father makes Tuttmanâs Tonic.â
âThat Tuttman. Maybe this isnât such a bad match after all. Theyâre very rich. Kings Point, no?â
âHe doesnât take any money from his father.â
âFoolish child. Why not?â
âI gather his father doesnât offer. A little on the cheap side.â
âWeâll see about that. But I donât think itâs a good idea for you to get married. Canât you just keep dating? You arenât pregnant or anything like that, are you?â
After pregnant what else was there? âNo, Mother. You always write in your column how parents have to respect their childâs decision if the child is rational and firm in her conviction.â
âDid I write that?â she mused. âI just changed my mind.â
âMother, please. I donât want to do this without your approval.â
âI donât approve. You mean youâd run off somewhere in cowland and get hitched?â
âUh-huh.
