My own departure from Alexandria is stealthy, also, but less than willing.

On the morning after my confrontation with Gaspar, I awake to a strong hand upon my mouth. In panic, I attempt to rear up, but suddenly other hands are holding tightly to my arms and legs. Only the shortest possible cry escapes me before a gag is shoved in my mouth. Thieves! In the shadows, I manage to make out at least three men working over me before a blindfold takes all sight. Is Gaspar all right? Has he been harmed?

Once I am fully bound, I give up struggling and listen. They are speaking in Persian, saying something about the readiness of the wagon. Am I to be taken somewhere? Where is Gaspar? What have they done to him? Murdered him? And of what use could I be to them?

I am so slight of frame that one of them lifts me with ease. As he moves me out of the tent, I hear whispering voices nearby and strain to decipher the words. By now, I know the differences among the sounds of copper, silver, and gold coins, and it is against the jingling of gold that I hear the unmistakable dulcet voice of Gaspar. And now it comes to me: Gaspar has sold me.
