Auden stretched out on the mat beside her. His eyes were still filled with the same exhaustion that plagued him this morning. The top half of his hair was pulled back, revealing every arch and dip of his sculpted face.

Ellie had heard stories of the Fae. Of their strength, speed, and power. She had also heard of their bewitching looks. Auden’s good looks only made even more sense to her now, though he seemed to be missing some of the more revealing Fae features.

“You’re staring,” Auden said through closed eyes.

“Sorry, but there’s not much else to look at, and I can’t really move.”

He laughed, a deep and truly comforting sound. “Excuses, excuses. If you like looking at me, just say so.”

Ellie scoffed and rolled her eyes. “If you’re done being an arrogant ass, could I ask you some questions? About you and your people?”

“I will never be done annoying you, my tiny bunny. How else could I get those beautiful eyes to roll? Well, I guess there is another, more fun way…” She started to swing at him, but her arm burned as the lacerations stretched at the movement. She winced in pain, drawing her arm back slowly. He moved onto his side, his face lining up to hers. Her heart skipped a beat at how close he now lay next to her. “Sorry. I’ll behave so you don’t hurt yourself further, and yes. You can ask me anything.”

“Why don’t you have…you know…” She waved a stiff finger around her ears and bared her teeth.

Auden huffed. “It’s a rather simple glamour.” His face began to blur and form into something else. Something…more.

His features became more defined, more angled. His ears grew and pointed at the ends, and he slowly ran a tongue along his now sharp canines. But what caught her breath was what stared at her with feral intensity: his gray eyes. They glowed like liquid silver. He was beautiful. He was fully and truly the definition of Fae beauty.

“The Eternal Queen has been looking for Fae for almost two decades now. Hiding my more primitive appearance seemed a wise choice.” In a blink, the Fae features were gone and once again replaced by human ones like her own.

“If you’re Fae and your hidden colony has yet to be found, why did you join the Queen's Army?” His lips formed a straight line. The painful tightness in his jaw appeared. “You can’t tell me.”

He shook his head gently.

“Are there a lot of Malavor citizens hidden in Dorumia?”

“Yes, though many died on the day of the attack.”

“Are they mostly Fae?”

“Yes. There are some other ancient races, but a few weeks before the siege on Malavor, the King warned the humans and other races of the attack. He advised they go and find refuge in surrounding territories. For the most part, only Fae took refuge in Dorumia.”

“How has the Queen not discovered your whereabouts yet?”

He smiled at her question. “Dorumia is very large, with land that easily conceals us.”

His answer was not clear, but she decided not to question it more.
