Chapter Sixteen

Crew felt as if they were both on display. Like specimens in a jar, the people at the party were trying to figure out if they would be worthy of joining their exclusive club. Yeah, well, he had a bad feeling about the group of people here. He felt as if they were all wearing masks. If they took them off, would their ugliness be exposed, or was he seeing something that wasn’t there?

"You need to come meet some of the women,” Mercy told Jade. “They have their own group and do all kinds of charity work." Mercy leaned a little closer and whispered, "Actually, I think it's just an excuse for them to get together and drink wine." There was a slight, hard edge to Mercy's laughter.

"Are you a member?" Jade asked as they walked away from him.

She shrugged one shoulder. "I'm not that involved, but I do show up occasionally. They do serve great wine." She laughed again.

They were close enough that Crew could keep an eye on Jade. He could just barely hear what they were saying now as Mercy stopped in front of a group of about five women. They were all dressed about the same: lavish jewelry and beautiful dresses. None of them could compete with Jade’s natural beauty.

"I want you all to meet Jade Stevens. She and her husband are looking for land in our area. They've fallen in love with our little town."

"What's not to love?" A beautiful redhead spoke up, then laughed. "Hi, Jade, I'm Crystal." She turned to the other women. "This is Olivia, Evelyn, Sophia, and Nora. Welcome to Hullston."

"That's Mercy for you," a man said as he came up to stand beside Crew. "Always looking out for everyone but herself. Hello, I'm Jeremiah Cotton."

"I’ve heard of you. The sheriff, right?" Crew asked.

The man laughed lightly. "Guilty."

Crew had noticed him earlier staring at Jade. He hadn't liked the way Jeremiah had watched her, as if he'd like to scoop her up and eat her in one bite.

"Bob mentioned you while we were looking at property today. Just in reference to different townspeople. I actually had a run-in with one of your deputies when I was passing through one night, though. He didn't seem welcoming at all. I'd helped one of the waitresses get her car started."

Jeremiah’s eyebrows rose. "Really? Which officer?"

"Deputy Young."

Jeremiah shook his head and sighed. "Leonard is a little too eager sometimes. He means well, but he has a tendency to go overboard. I'll talk with him."

"It was no big deal." He took a drink, then grimaced. He wasn't much of a champagne drinker.

Jeremiah chuckled. "At least I can fix your drink for you. Why don't we get you something a little stronger? Mercy loves to serve champagne at her little parties, but I'm not sure anyone enjoys the stuff. She has a great stock of some of the finest whiskey made right here in the state of Texas."

"I'm with you all the way," Crew said. He wasn't much of a whiskey drinker either.
