Chapter Thirteen

“Prisoner status report,” commanded Alpha 298.

“Sir, the prisoner seems to be doing as expected. She continues to attack the guards and dispatched another one yesterday,” answered the Delta.

Alpha 298 looked at the Delta and furrowed his eyebrows.

“You’re not Delta 869,” said the Alpha. It was more like a question than a statement. “Where is he? Why are you here instead?”

“No sir. I am Delta 9412. It was Delta 869 who was killed yesterday,” replied the new guard. “To answer your question as to why I am here, it’s because I won the pool.”

“I don’t understand. What pool?” asked the Alpha.

Delta 9412 froze. Was he not supposed to mention the pool to the captain?

“Spit it out, man.” The Alpha was livid. “Before I strap you into the pain amplifier.” The Alpha surprised himself by mentioning the pain amplifier out loud. Not only had he been fantasizing about using it lately, he actually verbalized it.

The Delta overcame his fear of talking about the pool. He had witnessed the use of a pain amplifier and had no wish to become its victim.

“The Deltas have set up a pool to see how long each one would last as the overseer for the prisoner. The winner is exempt from the draw for who becomes the next overseer,” answered the Delta.

Alpha 298 cackled at the ridiculous situation but composed himself when he realized the Delta was staring at him. This was a serious situation.

The Alpha cleared this throat and said, “But you said you won the pool and that is why you are here?”

“Yes, in the situation that the bridge liaison Delta is killed, the winner of the pool also has to serve as the next bridge liaison Delta.”

“You Deltas have strange customs and rituals. I don’t get it.” The Alpha shook his head.

“Yes, sir.” Delta 9412 remained standing at attention. He didn’t expect the Alpha to understand the Deltas.

Alpha 298 returned to his command console. He stroked his chin and furrowed his brows, deep in thought. At this rate, he would have no crew by the time he delivered the prisoner to Earth. He would need to come up with a plan.

The loud music had resumed again, but I was now used to it. I sat on my cot, waiting for my next meal. I had nothing sinister planned for the guard as I had decided to give them a reprieve today.

The loud music had cut out just moments before. I listened intently for the guard’s approach to the exterior side of the hatch. Instead of one set of footsteps, I heard two, in addition to something on wheels.

The hatch opened, and a figure entered who I didn’t recognize. Behind him, a Delta wheeled in a sinister looking contraption. Despite its sleek and shiny exterior, the straps, electrodes, and sensors told me a different story.

My years of engineering training told me the machine served a dark purpose.

Seeing the concern in my eyes, the stranger spoke.

“I see that this machine worries you,” the stranger said, laughing.
