Chapter Seventeen

OLIVIA

Present Day—November

WHEN I SPOKE WITH MAC about Milo’s proposal to stay at Pike and Eloisa’s house upstate, he said yes without hesitation, and ever since I broke the news, he’s had a grin on his face.

It doesn’t faze him knowing Milo is only doing this for me. He said it’s more than he could have ever asked for just to be in the same room as his son again. I only hope Milo can find it inside himself to put the past aside and offer Mac an olive branch before he passes. If not, Milo will spend the rest of his life regretting not making amends with his dad.

On our way out of the city, I turn around to find Mac asleep. I’m grateful I had the foresight to ask Jane to give him another dose of pain meds right before we left. The main reasons were to guarantee his comfort and ensure he could sleep peacefully on the car ride. Although, I’ll admit, I did have an ulterior motive.

For as long as I’ve known Milo, his emotional state has been unpredictable. He’s like a yo-yo, bouncing up and down on its string, temperamental and difficult to control. You’re never sure when it might get tangled in on itself, becoming a jumbled mess and a nightmare to unravel.

I’m terrified of what Milo might say to Mac if he were lucid. I figured Milo couldn’t do any damage if Mac was unable to have a coherent argument. He prefers his opponent to be able-bodied and capable of dishing out as much as he gives, which is fortunate for Mac due to his drug-induced state of mind.

Mac’s light snoring, the buzz of traffic, and the low hum of the radio are the only sounds accompanying me as I assess my current situation.

I’m in the confines of a small SUV with my ex-boyfriend and his terminally ill, estranged father. The same estranged father who I consider my family. We’re all driving together upstate to stay in a colonial-style house, essentially turning it into a makeshift hospice for Mac. A final farewell for the man who’s been there for me during my darkest days.

Not to mention the sexual tension that has been brewing between Milo and me since I saw him standing in the hallway of the hospital.

Why can’t I seem to control myself when he’s around?

Between Milo and me, our lives would make a captivating soap opera. The abnormal number of tragic events that have occurred continues to uptick, making me wonder what we ever did to the universe for it to conspire against us. If only Milo were willing, we could team up and stick it to the forces dead set on making our lives a living hell.

Images of Milo and me in battle armor, defending ourselves against Avenger-like villains, play through my head. Without warning, I burst out laughing, an ungraceful snort escaping my nose.

Unfortunately, I’ve never been good at expressing the proper emotion at the right time. I’m the
