I was huddled in the side seat of the jeep as Arsenal raced down the street.

We’d arrived at the pawn store first. King had stayed in the jeep with me while Arsenal and Malakai jumped out. I couldn’t see much down the alley but was that… a body?

Malakai and Arsenal didn’t take long. I saw Arsenal check the street while Malakai went to the pawn shop door and rattled it. Locked. When they came back, Arsenal was tense. I’d never seen Malakai disturbed before, but his eyes were wide, his expression sickened.

“What?” King asked.

“Massacre. Alphas involved.”

“But Ice—?”

“If he was hurt, we’d know.” Arsenal was already ripping away from the street.

“Why was he there?” I asked. It was hitting me now we’d seen it. “He knows who owns it.”

King looked struck. “Earlier… We…” He swallowed.

“What?” Arsenal demanded.

“After he saw you, he asked for a knife…”

“A knife?” I asked.

“For his nest… I mean, you saw it.”

“And?” I asked.

“Well he’s supposed to get two a month.”

“You… said no?” My voice was dry. “He saw me—another omega—with Arsenal during his rut, then asked for the thing that makes him feel safe, and you told him… no?”

Malakai was staring at me and for a moment, he just looked lost.

“We… didn’t think about it like that,” King whispered.

“Fuck,” Arsenal muttered. He slammed his fist into the steering wheel. “Fuck!”

“He’s not interested in your ruts, mate. Never has been. I didn’t…” But King was running his fingers through his light hair.

“It doesn’t matter,” I whispered. I could imagine it. I knew that desperation. Right now, my handbag was clutched in my arms. It had to be near. If it wasn’t—

“Tell me about the shop.”

“It’s where he asked us to get the knives. It’s owned by—” Malakai glanced at the others before pushing on. “By the guy who runs the trafficking ring. He took a liking to Ice, kept him there for a long time before he escaped. He always asks us to get the knives from that shop.”

“That’s—”

“Fucked up. We know. Alright, we know how sick he is,” Arsenal said. “That’s all we’re working towards. Trying to fucking fix it.”

“I didn’t think… You’re saying he just walked out and went there by himself?” King asked. “He wouldn’t do that.”

I winced. “Omega instincts aren’t a joke, especially if he isn’t well. Hyperfixation, rash decision making, even dissociation all can be symptoms of an unbalanced omega.”

King looked like he was going to be sick. I grabbed his hand, squeezing it tight. Malakai was looking out the window, so I didn’t catch his expression as he spoke. “It doesn’t matter. We’re getting him back.”

“Where are we?” I asked as we pulled up into a parking lot before a huge building.

“The people after him, they aren’t a joke. When he told us, we did our research. They’re based under the Gritch District, but when Ice escaped it was through an exit that came out in this theatre.”

“You live so close—”

“We’re trying,” King breathed. “We need a pack house, but they’re expensive. The garage was inherited, but isn’t selling for much—and Ice panics if we talk about moving.
