15. Vive la (Pre) Résistance!

As Max took my hand and led me across the bridge to the gorgeous cabin, I thought about all of the reasons why I shouldn’t be doing this with him. Not that we’d actually done anything yet, or that I was entertaining thoughts about all of the things that two people could do together.

The forget-me-nots were a little less dense here, but they were still in abundance, and I couldn’t help but remember how it had felt, earlier on, when I’d pulled the flower from Max’s hair. That sense of déjà vu.

In one of Melissa’s romance novels, I’d read a passage where the wise old aunt was telling her beautiful young niece that when she met the right guy, it would feel as though she’d known him all her life.

But I already had the right guy. The guy who everyone else thought was much too good for me. The guy who had brought peace to the supernatural enclaves for the first time in living memory. So why was I here, now, with someone else?

‘Wait, Max.’ I pulled my hand from his as we approached the back door of the cabin. ‘I’m not sure about this. I mean … Will. He’s … well …’

He sighed sadly. ‘I know how you feel about Will, Wanda. The whole world does. We can see the way you gaze at him in all the pictures. But that’s exactly why you have to come in here with me, now. I have to show you what you’re missing out on. Before it’s too late. I’ve never been the kind of weredog to beg but … please, Wanda. Trust me. Coming in there with me could really rock your world, but maybe change isn’t always such a bad thing.’

I looked Max up and down, feeling my legs grow weak. I had absolutely no doubt that he could rock my world, but the question was: could I actually do that to Will? And also … he was a whole lot cockier about his prowess than I would have guessed. Rock my world? That was exactly what Callum had said to Melissa, not what I’d expect to be coming from Max’s mouth.

I was glad he’d uttered those words, though, because they were exactly the sort of mood killer I needed right now.

‘Listen, I’m glad you’re so confident of your ability to rock my world, Max. But the thing is, I’m just not the kind of girl to do that.’

He looked down at me, seemingly confused. ‘To do what?’ he asked. As he spoke, Jasper Jaunt suddenly pulled open the door and said, ‘Well come on. Are we getting this super-private party started or what?’

I gazed behind him. The house was filled with people. Blinking, I looked at Max. ‘What is this?’

‘This is the Pre-Resistance,’ he told me. ‘What did you think I was taking you to? Wait … you thought …?’ He blinked rapidly, and I could feel the heat of his embarrassment rushing out of him, only to bang clumsily against the heat of my embarrassment.
