CHAPTER NINETEEN

Journeying to the village only took another two days as we traveled by mundane means rather than by warg. Nadir had sent Dread off on her own to hunt and grow stronger, using the bond that she had made for them as a means to track her and call her back if Nadir needed her.

The two of us walked in our dirtiest clothes, covered in blood and grime from the dungeon. It was to cement that we had indeed been fighting their way here.

The destruction and barren land around us cemented in my mind that the fight here had been much too brutal for what had happened. What creatures had come through this place? What had they wanted to do? Why was it so bad that the gods themselves had to call upon outsiders to fight their battles for them and then allow them to be taken from them?

Maybe next time Seraestar comes to me, I can ask? Movement to my side caught my attention and almost startled me, but it was only Nadir in her glamour.

The two glamours we wove around ourselves were for siblings, the female one Nadir wore was basically her if she were in orc form, but with dark skin and brown eyes, lighter scars crossing her arms from ‘years of fighting’ for a mercenary band that fell recently trying to raid the barrier ruins.

Mine was close to hers, scars as well, but more on my chest and shoulders, with one bisecting my left eye just for flavor.

I carried a mace-sized Shaper on my hip, and the dagger in my hip sheath, while Nadir carried Father’s axe.

By the time we got to the front gate, we found the half-closed wooden doors to the wall stymying the flow of any traffic that could have come in, or stopped any monsters coming. Guards stood there, but they were barely armed and didn’t care about the straggling people who meandered into the village.

They glowered at us, but since we looked capable, I was sure they would leave us alone. Midnight flew overhead and kept watch for the subjects that could take us to whomever was in charge. He didn’t find anyone right away, but my keen hearing picked up on the clanging of a hammer.

“That will likely be Craglim,” I grumbled to my sister as I set my course for that noise.

Rowland had told me about him once. Hated anyone not dwarven, which was concerning, considering he was working with humans and taking orders from one. Did that mean he hated mages worse?

All I knew was that he was a ‘bleached arsehole and a shite smith’ from Rowland and that was all he would say about his family other than Vilmas and the boys. Vilmas, on the other hand, had called him more names than I was certain she entirely understood the meanings of, and had growled that if he ever came back to Sunrise, she would hang him from the wall and use his testicles as target practice for the knife throwing Vrawn had been showing her.
