CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

The morning air was cool, though there was a heaviness to it as the damp jungle air spread throughout the city. Stretching, Thorn worked the kinks out of his back and headed into the forge, picking up a piece of metal on his way. He had done his morning exercise and was excited to get started.

From the piles of material lying around, Thorn could tell Aciakko had settled right in. Noticing a set of five sharp swords laid out on one of the tables, Thorn had to laugh. It appeared the guild master had moved her entire operation over to the Titan Forge. Tossing the piece of metal into the glowing mouth of the forge, Thorn raised the heat as he gathered the other tools he needed.

It was early in the morning, and he was excited to get to work. They had arrived back in the city the day before, and his companions’ promise of one drink had turned into a long evening of celebration, so he hadn’t gotten back to the forge until late at night. Still, it had been a fun evening and Thorn was happy to make friends. Drawing the ingot out of the heat, he was about to start hammering when he saw Aciakko walk in, wiping her eyes with a wet cloth.

“Morning.”

“Oh! Good morning. When did you come back?” Aciakko asked, tossing the cloth aside.

“Late last night.”

“And you’re forging already? Sheesh. Talk about dedication. What are you working on?”

“I’m thinking of making a bow,” Thorn said. “There were a few times when I wanted a ranged weapon on this past mission.”

“A bow, huh? I guess that’s right, you did use a bow in your test. What sort of bow are you making?”

“Um, I was thinking a longbow at first, but it might be too unwieldy because of my size. Maybe a short, recurve bow?”

“Hmm. Bows aren’t very common since the jungle is so thick, but I know there’s a good bowyer in the center of the city. They’d probably have bow strings you could buy. Oh, but before that, you might want to take a look at this.”

Seeing that Aciakko was tapping on a stack of papers that had been set beside the short swords laid out, Thorn put the ingot back in the forge and walked over. There were at least a dozen papers in the stack, and as Thorn picked up the first paper and started reading, his forehead furrowed.

“What’s this?”

“Uh, that one is the first request from the Adventurers’ Guild. Fitzburn is trying to be clever and has ordered a set of swords as his first artifact.”

“Why are there five swords here? Wouldn’t that make them five requests?”

Shaking her head, Aciakko gave him a slightly sheepish grin, as if embarrassed that Fitzburn had been able to pull a move on them.

“No, like I said, this is a set. You showed that lightning rune, right? Well, he’s asking for a set of five swords that can be used for a combined lightning attack.
