Chapter 7

Calista returned to the cabin. Barringer wasn’t there yet, and she planned on using the alone time to her advantage. She quickly walked to the bathroom, ripped open the pregnancy test. Following the directions to a tee, she placed the test stick on a paper towel then waited. The directions said to wait three minutes before viewing the results. She washed her hands, exited the bathroom and anxiously paced the hallway. She didn’t want to check it too early and she didn’t want to check it too late. She wanted to check it right at three minutes.

Seemed like they were the longest three minutes she’d ever waited for anything…

She tried not to get too excited because it could’ve been stress causing her symptoms as she had initially thought. But what if she was pregnant? She checked her watch. One full minute to go…

A baby would be a blessing. It would be the child she never thought she’d have. That Barringer wanted so badly and didn’t think he could have.

Okay, stop, Calista. You don’t know if you’re pregnant or not. Don’t get your hopes up. Just wait another…

She looked at her watch.

Wait another twenty seconds and find out for sure.

She stared those twenty seconds away on her watch, then hurried back into the bathroom, looked at the stick and said, “Two lines. Two pink lines. What does that mean? What did I do with the directions?”

When she saw the result guide right on the test stick, she said out loud, “Duh, Calista. Calm down. Okay, so one line means, not pregnant. Two lines mean, pregnant. Wait, I’m pregnant? Oh my God. I’m pregnant!” She picked up the test stick from the counter to take a closer look, feeling rapid beats of her heart pounding in her chest. She took a moment to breathe, then decided to take the other test for confirmation.

She repeated the same steps, waited in the hallway three minutes, then checked that test.

Two pink lines.

According to these two tests, she was pregnant, but it wasn’t enough confirmation for her. She had to know for certain. She grabbed her phone, pulled up an Internet browser and searched for an urgent care facility. It was still early in the afternoon and she was sure she’d find one that was open. She hopped back in the car, hit the GPS to begin the drive to the nearest facility – about seven miles away. Once she arrived, she checked in at the desk, informed the receptionist she was vacationing in Nags Head for the weekend and needed a blood pregnancy test. The woman told her she’d have to pay out of pocket – fine by Calista. She took out her bank card and handed it to the woman, signed a receipt, then waited.

She wanted to call Kalina back, but she needed to be one-hundred percent sure she was pregnant first.

Sitting in the waiting room, she closed her eyes, wishing she was pregnant. Those wishes quickly turned into an all-out prayer. With her eyes closed tight, she prayed for those home pregnancy tests to be right.
