Chapter 23

I tried to wipe the blood from my eyes and push back the hair that was plastered to my face as I looked down at my friend who lay dying in the snow. Every short, ragged breath that came from his mouth made a cloud of pink vapor in the freezing air.

“Please get up and fight by my side, big man” I heard myself say out loud.

My friend’s eyes focused on me for a moment and he smiled before his chest stopped moving. I watched the life disappear from his eyes before reaching down to close them with the ends of my fingers. I then closed his animal skin cloak and pulled up the hood which had the head of a great snarling bear.

I looked towards the great mountain knowing I would never make the safety of the caves before my enemies caught up to me and I didn’t have to look over my shoulder to know they were closing in because I could hear them trudging through the knee-deep snow. I got the hair pushed back from my face and pulled my hood up that had the head of a wolf bearing its fangs then grasped my wooden spear. I stood then turned to look at the men who were approaching me with weapons made of wood and stone.

They paused when I shouted out “the gods look down favorable upon me because one will stand against many!”

Their only response was grunts and snarls that sounded as if they were made by animals. They began moving towards me again and I high stepped through the snow to meet them. I drew back my arm and cast my spear at the lead man striking him in the bare chest. He stared down at the at the spear in disbelieve and tried to tug it free before falling face first in the snow.

I then drew both knives that were made from sharpened bone from the sheaths at my waist and charged into the men. I managed to slit three throats and bury one of my knives into a groin before getting a spear thrust into my gut. I bent forward as the blinding pain flashed through my whole body then felt another spear enter my back between my shoulder blades. I fell to my knee and looked to the sky as I heard a voice call my name from beyond the clouds.

“Jack, please wake up. You’re scaring me.”

I opened my eyes and smiled at the pretty Asian woman with long black hair and big dark eyes.

“What’s wrong, angel? You look distressed.”

The woman gently placed a hand to my cheek and said “you looked to be in great pain and were speaking a language I have never heard before.”

I reached up and grasped her hand giving it a gentle squeeze saying “I’ve been having bad dreams lately.”

She looked concerned when she asked “what kind of dreams cause such pain and make you speak in such a strange tongue?”

I shook my head as I tried to remember the dream that was fading fast from my memory and said “I don’t know.
