5.4 Putting It All Together

Evaluations of sexual behavior typically contain a wealth of data points that do not always converge. As indicated in previous sections of this chapter, sexual recidivism is a low base rate condition typically involving examinees that are motivated to not be forthcoming. These are also typically high-stakes evaluations, with dire consequences on both sides (e.g., loss of freedom v. the potential of new victims). Additionally, the interrater reliability between different evaluators assessing the same individual for potential civil commitment under the SVP act has been shown to be poor (Kappa = .54) and the agreement between the evaluators on an individual’s paraphilic disorder diagnosis ranged from poor to fair (Kappas ranging from .30 for sexual sadism disorder to .65 for pedophilic disorder; Levenson 2004). SNS data may enrich the sexual behavior evaluation, as it offers the opportunity to examine postings made directly by the individual, outside of the context of the evaluation; as such, the data may represent a more “pure” form of the individual’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors and/or experiences, which may help to reduce the overall effect of social desirability during the evaluation.
