Chapter 9

CJ’s phone rang as he walked out of Wynyard Station onto George Street. The warm spring air blended with the city’s noise and aromas. He pulled the phone out of his suit pants. Queenie—her name on his screen still made him smile, even after so many months together. They’d met at the beginning of winter, when the air was crisp in the evenings, and now spring had sprung over the city. Soon, the jacaranda trees would bloom purple flowers, and the summer heat would sit heavily over the city.

‘Yeah?’

‘Hey. I hope you didn’t make any plans for tonight.’

CJ’s smile faded. ‘No. Why?’

‘I forgot that it’s my anniversary of starting work at Neve’s garage, so we are all going out for dinner.’

‘Okay. I’ll just grab some takeaway. I have a couple of emails I want to catch up on.’ CJ had forced himself to come home for dinner with Queenie every night since starting his new job, and it’d become a habit. A good habit. Of course, he couldn’t do it when he was travelling for work, but he missed hanging out with her and was always keen to come home. This would be his first night alone in his own place for... five months. Gosh. Time had flown by. Had she really been living with him for so long? They’d never fought in that time, just eased into a routine that worked for them both, going to work, spending time at the markets. Often she would craft at the table in the evenings while he worked on his laptop, and then they’d fall into bed together, their bodies wound around each other. Or they’d stay up too late, having sex against his glass windows or on the couch, before snoozing on each other, chatting about the world. In a few weeks it would be their six month anniversary. Maybe he should plan something, a little getaway, or something. His lungs seized. This was his longest relationship ever.

‘CJ. Are you alright?’

He forced himself to breathe in. ‘Yeah. Just thinking...’

‘Sounds dangerous.’ She laughed, her gorgeous laugh ringing in his ears. Damn, he was addicted to her. She was bloody everything he’d never known he wanted in a partner, and they’d fallen into life together without any conflict. Just great sex and so much wonderful conversation. Maybe it was time to introduce her to Mum... He avoided talking about family so far. He couldn’t avoid it forever, not if he wanted to take a risk and ask Queenie to stay with him.

‘Yeah, nah. It’s nothing. Have fun with your colleagues tonight.’ The air in CJ’s lungs felt like it was burning as he hung up. He walked faster heading down the street towards the harbour. If he introduced her to Mum, it would all be real. These last five months of happiness. Happiness. Imagine that—he’d never believed that he could do happiness, or a long term relationship, and yet, here they were, five months after Queenie moved into his spare room... Well, into his room.
