TIMPSILA (AKA BREADROOT, PRAIRIE TURNIP)
Pediomelum esculenta and others
Edible parts/harvest time: Roots in late spring to early summer. Native, found mostly in undisturbed prairies.
This once-common plant was a staple food for indigenous tribes of the central to northern Great Plains. Due to massive habitat loss, overgrazing, and fire suppression, it is now restricted mostly to pristine prairie remnants in protected preserves. The Lakota and other tribes still sustainably harvest this plant from healthy populations on tribal lands, but it shouldnât be collected in the wild unless found in abundance, and only then sparingly and with proper harvesting techniques. Best practice is to propagate and grow it in gardens, or to start and encourage new populations wherever suitable habitat exists. Seeds and starts are available commercially in many native wildflower nurseries.
