It was early afternoon on the last day of the year. Eddie and Mave drove to the Wainwright place with the money. Eddie carried the bag from the car. Charlie was at the window and saw them coming.
Charlie opened the door. Eddie smiled, clutching the grey hessian bag, âHome delivery, sir? Did you order two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand pounds in well used notes?â
Charlie smiled and stepped back, opening the door wide.
Inside, Charlie said, âI thought security guards were delivering it?â
Eddie said, âThey did. They delivered it to us. We didnât want them coming here. No point having another two people knowing where a big bag of cash will be sitting overnight.â
Charlie said, âWeâd be in a bind right enough if security men were plotting against us.â
âNo sense in taking the chance, Charlie,â Eddie said.
âI suppose not. Now sit yourselves down. Lizâs gone to get the papers. Iâll put the kettle on.â
Fifteen minutes later they sat at the big pine kitchen table, the low winter sun strong and yellow through the window spotlighting Charlie as he spoke. âFair exchange, for now, at least.â He pushed the documents toward Mave, âThe deeds for this place, all in order and signed over to you. If we catch the fella and you get your money back, you can burn them.â
Mave said, âListen, Charlie-â
He raised a hand, âItâs decided, Mave. We canât say how grateful we are but we want you to have security on the money. Something might happen tomorrow, to me or to Liz, or to both of us. If it does, itâll be too late to make amends.â He gave the stack of papers a final push toward Mave and he kept his hand there until Mave put her hand on the documents.
Liz smiled, âHopefully, at this time tomorrow we can have a drink and celebrate this man being in prison and Gabby being back in his box.â
Eddie said, fingers crossed. âI spoke to Mac before we left. Bryceâs guys are still trying to get a result from the French police on Volvo 740s but they reckon they have things pretty much as they want them at the service station.â
âAnd thereâs no black Volvo in place at Hilton Park right now?â Liz asked.
âNot when we last spoke.â
Charlie shook his head. âHow the hell is this guy planning to get away? I still think thatâs his biggest problem.â
Eddie shrugged, âMore to the point, what has Bryce got in mind for catching him? After all that brain-storming the other night, Bryce isnât saying much, but Mac says thatâs his style. Macâs confident in him.â
Liz said, âDS Bryce does seem a good mix of, well, caution, I suppose and confidence.â
Charlie reached for his wifeâs hand, âI hope youâre right.â
Eddie lifted the hessian bag from the floor, âWant to count this, just to be sure?â
Liz said, âDid you count it when they delivered it?â
Eddie said, âWell, they counted it out for us.â
âHappy with it?â Charlie asked.
âLooked fine. Fifties in bundles of a hundred. Fifty bundles. Didnât take long.â
Liz sighed, âIâm glad DS Bryce decided not to put a bug in with the money.
