I have always had a strong personality. I can be confrontational, which can sometimes rub people the wrong way. But in the case of the defining moment of my life, a car accident where I caused someone’s death, I couldn’t have predicted how my personality would help me. But it did. I don’t know how I got through that challenging time. There was no prescription. No steps written down to tell me what to do. I just tried to face the truth. I accepted that I couldn’t control the event, but I could control how I behaved afterward. If you spend time brooding over why me, why did this happen, you stay a victim. I think facing the facts, looking into the fire, so to speak, is the only way to get through to the other side. Today’s me, ten years out from that tragedy, would like to tell my loved ones that no matter how bad it gets, the pain won’t last forever.
