After talking to my mom and having her assure me that Katie is doing okay, Carrie joins me in the bathroom.
âOkay, whatâs going on?â
I peak a glance at her in the mirror. âNothing. Iâm fine.â
âYouâre not, though. I could tell the instant you walked in the door.â
I just shrug my shoulders and finish washing my hands. âIâm having issues with David, but itâs all right, I have it under control. David and I are not getting back together. No way, no how.â
She watches me closely, and I wait for her next question, but it never comes. âWell, thatâs great news! But I still want you to know that if thereâs anything Scott or I can do, you know weâre here for you, right?â
I nod my head, and it doesnât slip past me that sheâs talking about her and Scott as a âwe.â Theyâre obviously good together, and Iâm sure there will be wedding bells in their future soon. Thereâs a part of me thatâs envious, but another part of me that knows thereâs not going to be any time soon for me to settle down.
âWe should have done this a long time ago,â she says, interrupting my thoughts. âWe should have gone out for drinks and celebrated before tonight. Youâre doing great now. The divorce is over, and you have the freedom to find a better guy.â
I laugh because Carrieâs always trying to play matchmaker, but I canât help but point out, âThere arenât a lot of eligible men in Forest Grove.â
Carrie turns from the mirror and waits for me to look at her. âYeah, but Bart is available, and you should go for him. Itâs not like you havenât loved him forever.â
I could laugh, but I donât. Carrie knows Iâve always had a crush on her brother, but sheâs never wanted to talk about it before. âYou made me promise not to date him when we were teens. Do you remember that?â
Carrie waves that off. âWe were just kids. You should go for it if thatâs what you want.â
I donât commit either way. I just walk out of the bathroom and hold the door open for her to follow me. Almost as soon as we get back to the table, Carrie says that she and Scott have to go.
âWhat? But weââ he starts, but then he and Carrie exchange looks, and sheâs pulling him out the door, waving goodbye as they depart.
Bart laughs. âThat was subtle. Right?â
âYeah, well your sister was never really known for being subtle.â
âYeah. So can I get you another drink?â
I shake my head. âI better not. I need to go and get Katie before I go home, so maybe Iâll just have a water.â
He waves for the server and asks for two waters. When the server leaves, I tell him, âYou could have had another one.â
âNah, Iâm not much of a drinker anyway.â
âWell, it looks like me coming ruined your chance to get to know Scott. I had no idea Carrie would barge out of here like she did.
