CHAPTER FOURTEEN
That was close.
How had he been so foolish? Heâd been so careful to cover his tracks, to make sure he left no traces. Well, only the traces he wanted. They had to know who he was somehow, after all.
But heâd never expected them to learn about the mines. As he ran through the field, directly toward a stretch of forest that stretched on for several miles, he could only assume it was Morgan. Heâd been oddly thrilled as the duration of her incarceration had come to its close. He wanted her out. He wanted a formidable agent coming after him. Itâs what kept him on his toes. Itâs what made the entire thing exciting to him.
He supposed waiting for her to come out of prison had been a foolish idea. Maybe almost poetic or romantic. It had felt right at the time, but now he wasnât so sure.
After all, ten years was a very long time. He wasnât as strong as he used to be, not quite as fast and reliable. His mind still felt just as sharp but at the end of the day, he wasnât sure that mattered. What he hadnât expected was Morganâs determination.
Heâd been so caught up in his own plans and schemes that heâd somehow failed to understand that Morgan had likely spent the last ten years thinking about himâ¦about the Seven Signs Killer. Sheâd likely been fuming and focusing on how to find and stop him when she got out.
Ten years of planning and obsessing.
Maybe heâd made a grave error.
But even if that was the case, it didnât matter. He had one more victim. One more death before the work was done. After thatâ¦well, after that, he had no idea what he would do. Heâd come to enjoy killing. He wasnât so sure he could just give it up at the drop of a dime.
He was so caught up in his thoughts that he didnât even realize heâd already come to the edge of the forest. He hurried in and squatted down behind the base of a large oak. From where the strip of forest was positioned, he could see across the field heâd just come through. Heâd come out of a small tunnel that was really little more than a hole in the groundâ¦an exit Morgan and her partner would not have been able to find without an intimate knowledge of the cave system. They hadnât spent the last decade in those twisting, turning tunnels.
Across the field, the land took a slight downward tilt. Because of this, he could just barely see the shapes of Morgan and her partner coming back out of the cave. So he hadnât killed the man after all. He didnât think he had; he hadnât put a lot of power behind the blow after picking up the first sizable rock he could find.
Still, he supposed theyâd have a renewed passion now, more desperate than ever to find him.
In other words, he was going to have to get moving.
