We get to the Elvis-not-Elvis wedding chapel, and Iâm pleasantly surprised. Itâs a small bona fide chapel, but itâs quaint and lovely inside. Thereâs a wrought iron arbor covered in a variety of every kind of flower one can imagine. Itâs absolutely stunning. Weâre barely on time for our seven thirty wedding appointment, so the minister and his assistant rush us inside where we sign all the appropriate paperwork before our ceremony is performed.
âNothing like cutting it close on your special day,â I say. Since we were running late, I didnât have time to do my hair, so itâs super wavy, and not in a good way, but I am wearing my dress and âfancy,â but sensible shoes. I say that because theyâre flats. Beck loves my curly hair, saying it reminds him of Englishâs.
âYou really could be her mother.â
âEnglishâs hair has symmetry. Mine looks like it got stuck in a wind tunnel.â
âYouâre too hard on yourself, Sheridan.â His hand reaches for a chunk of twisted locks, and he rubs his fingers back and forth through the mess.
The wedding lasts all of five minutes, but when the ring time comes, Iâm amazed at what he slips on my finger. Beck bought a stunning diamond band with a huge center stone for me. It works as both an engagement and wedding ring. He also bought himself a plain, but lovely platinum band. Our wedding date is engraved in both rings.
I thought Iâd feel empty during the ceremony, but oddly, a warmth spreads throughout me. Itâs not so much because of the wedding itself, but because Beck, usually a douche face, has suddenly become kind and is trying his best to make this special. This, coupled with our little romp in the sack before we came here, is softening me up toward him. Whether or not itâs a good thing remains to be seen, but itâs the way it is. And it makes me happy.
On the way back to the hotel, I canât stop staring at my ring. âThis is too much.â
âItâs perfect on your hand, and I want this to mean something, even though this canât be what you would have chosen for your ideal engagement and wedding. I know running away to Vegas isnât everyoneâs idea of a great wedding, but I want us to look back and remember this day as something we enjoyed.â
I lean over and kiss him. âThank you for being so thoughtful.â
Dinner is amazing. The fountain show is every bit as beautiful as Beck told me it would be. The food is delicious, and Beck tells me about the first time he came here. It was his first travel shoot, and he was super nervous. Young and naïve, he didnât know what to expect, but the magazine insisted on him, and he showed up freaked as hell. They had him shoot the fountains and wanted to see what he could do, so he gave them something different. He shot them in sequence, as each one blasted up in the air.
