SNOWED DOWN UNDER

The 1970–71 Ashes series was the longest rubber in Test history. Six matches were scheduled, but with the third Test having been abandoned without a ball being bowled, a seventh was added. This took place at Sydney with England one up in the series. Australia had just overhauled England’s first innings total of 184 with seven wickets down, when a short-pitched delivery from John Snow hit leg-spinner Terry Jenner on the side of the head. The batsman staggered and fell to the ground, clutching his temple.

Snow, England’s premier strike bowler, already had form in the series. In the fourth Test another short ball had struck tail-ender Graham McKenzie in the face. Now the Sydney crowd reacted angrily as Jenner was assisted from the field. At the end of the over, when Snow returned to his position on the fine-leg boundary alongside Paddington Hill, a drunken spectator grabbed him by the shirt. Dozens of beer cans were hurled onto the grass. Fellow fast bowler Bob Willis ran to Snow’s aid and moved him out of the danger area. The England captain, Ray Illingworth, took his players off the field and refused to return until the debris had been cleared and order restored.

Jenner eventually resumed his innings, but England won the match and regained the Ashes. As for John Snow, he fractured the little finger on his right hand when, in trying to make a catch during Australia’s second innings, he collided with the boundary fence. No beer cans were thrown.

FREAK INJURIES

Middlesex and England off-spinner Fred Titmus had four toes sliced off his left foot by a boat’s propeller while swimming in the sea during the 1967–68 tour of the West Indies. Amazingly, he was playing cricket eight weeks later.
