The manager, Mr Phillpotts, showed them into a small room, close to the canteen to give them some privacy. They declined the offer of yet another cup of coffee. He left them and returned a few minutes later with the man they’d come to see, Tim Davis.

“This is Tim. He’ll need to eat before he gets on the road again, so if you wouldn’t mind making this interview snappy, I think we’d both be grateful to you.”

“Don’t worry, Mr Phillpotts, we won’t take long, I promise,” Sara affirmed with a smile.

Tim seemed confused. He watched his boss leave the room and pulled out the chair opposite them and sat with a thud. “The boss said you wanted to see me but didn’t tell me what it was about.”

“Thanks for agreeing to speak with us, Mr Davis. I’m DI Sara Ramsey, and this is my partner, DS Carla Jameson.”

“Okay, pleased to meet you, I guess. What do you want from me?” He sat back and swept his long fringe to one side as it dropped over his eyes.

“We’re investigating two crimes in the area and wondered if you could help us with our enquiries, Tim.”

“I’ll do my best. You think I might have seen something on my route, is that it?”

“Not really. Okay, please bear with me for now. When was the last time you saw your ex-wife?”

“Sharon?”

“Sorry, do you have more than one?”

“No, I don’t. What’s going on? Has something happened to her?”

Sara stared at him, gauging his reaction. “If you could just answer the question.”

“We met up for lunch a few weeks ago. Why?”

“And you do that type of thing regularly?” Sara found the news surprising. She didn’t know many ex-couples who still shared a meal after falling out of love with each other. Maybe there was still a spark left between them?

“Yes, off and on. Just because two people get divorced, it doesn’t mean they stop caring about each other.”

“Fine. The last time you met her, did she mention if there was anything troubling her?”

“Not really. We made a point of never being negative. We’re generally both positive people, if you must know.”

“May I ask why you got divorced in that case?”

“Things didn’t work out. We simply agreed to part ways, but we still maintain a good friendship. Why? Has she said I’ve done something to her? What’s this about? Why are you questioning me like this?”

Sara let out a long sigh. “I’m sorry to have to tell you that Sharon was murdered over the weekend.”

“What? No, this isn’t happening. It can’t be. Sharon…dead. No, murdered! Who? Bloody hell. I can’t think straight. No…she can’t be gone. Not Sharon.”

Sara placed a hand over his. “Can I get you a glass of water?”

“Yes, please. A double brandy would be preferable, though.”

Carla stood. “I’ll get it.”

She left the room and closed the door behind her.

“I’m sorry to break the news to you at work. You understand the need for us to be here, don’t you?”

“Not really. Please tell me you don’t think I had anything to do with this?” Sweat beaded his furrowed brow.
