CHAPTER TWELVE

"Hey." Jacques shook my arm slightly. "Wake up. We're here, love."

Confused, I rubbed my eyes and tried to remember where here was. I'd met Jacques at the office so that I could check the leads list and my mail. The list had proven to be dismal once again, so we'd quickly departed and driven over to Eleanor's, where we were to meet Yvette. Although it was only a fifteen-minute drive from the office, that hadn't stopped me from taking a little snooze in Jacques' car.

"Wow." I blinked and sat up in my seat. "I can't believe that I fell asleep." Grace had woken up three times last night, and the sleep deprivation that went along with being a new mother had already caught up to me. "I can't wait to start having my full-caffeinated dosages of Starbucks again."

Jacques' piercing green eyes stared at me with concern. "Darling, may I be honest?"

I yawned. "Aren't you always?"

"You look like death warmed over. This is too much for you. I told you that I'd handle everything with the listing, including the showings."

"Maybe you're right. But I did want to meet the reader in person." I released my seat belt then looked in my side mirror in time to see a red BMW pull up behind us. The vanity license plate said TREADER. "Is that Yvette? What's with the plate? Is she a swimmer too?"

Jacques rolled his eyes. "It stands for tarot reader, of course. You've a lot to learn, my dear."

Apparently so. "Seriously, what do you know about this woman? Maybe she's a hoax."

He reached into the back seat for his briefcase. "Okay, do me a favor. Lose that cynical look on your face. It's shining through and not like a ray of sunshine. For the record, no, I don't think she's a fake. Besides, what would it matter? We only want to know what the cards mean. There's no charge involved, so what do we have to lose?"

"Why is she doing this for free?" I tried to keep the skepticism out of my voice.

Jacques proudly stuck his nose out in the air. "If you must know, I did offer to pay for her time today, but she refused. I sold Yvette's house last year and even managed to get her ten grand above the asking price." He gave me a superior grin. "There aren't many people who can do that."

He was right. It was one thing for me to obtain a listing but quite another for me to end up selling it. And above the asking price? That was a pipe dream—like my mother-in-law and me tolerating each other one day.

We got out of the car, and a moment later Yvette joined us on the front porch. Jacques reached out a hand to her.

"Hello, Jacques. Lovely to see you as always." She gave him a peck on the cheek, and then her inquisitive dark eyes settled on me. "Is this Cynthia?"

Hmm. Shouldn't she know this already? She's supposed to be a psychic, after all.
