It was dark by the time Morgan and Derik pulled outside of Owen's house. The single-story family home stood in the evening, its small windows glowing with warm yellow light. Morgan hopped out of the passenger seat of Derik's car, rushing up to the front door and banging hard. Derik hurried up behind her.
Morgan fidgeted anxiously as she waited for an answer. Finally, after several tense moments, a woman in her thirties answered the door, looking at them with concern. Morgan had read that Owen Fernandez had a wife, and this must be her.
"Ma'am, we're with the FBI," Morgan said, flashing her badge. "We need to speak with Owen Fernandez. It's a matter of urgency."
The woman's eyes widened with fear. "Is he in trouble? What's going on?"
Morgan didn't have time to sugar-coat things. "We believe he's in danger. We need to find him now."
The woman's face paled as she stepped back and let them inside. "He's not here," she said, her voice trembling. "I haven't seen him since last night."
Morgan's heart sank. They were too late.
"Do you have any idea where he might be?" Derik asked, taking charge of the situation.
The woman shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "No, he didn't leave a note or anything. He just said he had to go out and left."
Morgan's mind raced as she tried to come up with a plan. They had no idea where the killer could have taken Owen, and time was running out. They needed to find him before it was too late.
"We were fighting," the woman said, her voice trembling. "I thought... I thought maybe he went out with his buddies, and I wanted to give him space, so I didn't call him. You don't really think he's in danger, do you?"
Morgan exchanged a worried look with Derik. "Ma'am, we can't say for certain, but given the circumstances, it's a possibility."
The woman started to cry harder, her hands shaking as she held onto the kitchen counter. "Please, you have to find him," she said, looking at them with pleading eyes. "He's a good man; he didn't do anything wrong."
"We'll do everything we can," Morgan said firmly. "But we need your help. Is there anyone Owen might have gone to see? Any friends or family members?"
The woman shook her head. "No, he's been distant lately. I don't know who he talks to anymore."
Morgan felt a sense of frustration building inside of her. They were running out of leads, and every second that passed was one more second that Owen could be in danger.
The best bet they had was the knowledge that the killer, whoever he was, had an obsession with films. They could check every movie theater, any potentially abandoned cinemas. But considering some victims had been killed at home, the search seemed near impossible.
Either way, they had to try.
"We'll do everything we can, ma'am," Morgan said, before she turned back to the car.
They needed a gameplan, and they needed one now.
