Chapter Fourteen

Overcoming the demon’s fiendish curse was going to take some hex-tra effort. But for now, I wanted to focus on the magic of Marvelton.

We followed the dusty track away from Joanie until it became a cobblestone pavement. Civilisation was almost upon us! The distant outline of the main town of Marvelton reminded me of the opening shots of a Charles Dickens adaptation - with sturdy brick buildings standing tall against the city skyline. But of course, the smoke that had swirled from the chimneys of eighteenth-century London hadn’t actually been multi-coloured and sparkly like the plumes I could see spiralling up ahead.

Even at this distance I could taste the steam, steel, and sprawl of the town. But more than that - I could feel the thick mesmerising magic.

Surely that was where we’d find the mysterious building my mother had spoken of?

We continued our merry way along the cobblestones but, on the outskirts of the town, we came upon a cluster of abandoned wooden stalls and brick buildings. From the looks of it, this place had once pulsed with life and commerce. But it’d presumably been overshadowed by the shops nearer to the town’s centre, until it’d eventually been left to decay.

I stepped over to join Harry as he investigated a wooden structure. Judging by the dusty bottles containing colourful substances, it must’ve been an old-fashioned apothecary. Best not to touch anything!

Next to the stall was a large wooden building with its doors wide-open. I guessed from the iron forge and half-finished armour that this had been a blacksmith’s. I wondered whether the owner had been magical, or perhaps he’d just kept up with a trade that had gone out of fashion in the human world. And what sorts of horses had he shod? Unicorns, perhaps?

Opposite the blacksmith’s stood a red-brick shop with large windows, through which we saw shelves lined with leather-bound books, crystal balls, and amulets. Oh wow, a magical consortium!

But none of this brought us any nearer to finding my mum’s mystery location.

I smiled sadly at Harry. “I wish I knew exactly where we could find the building in my mother’s message.”

I frowned as I realised my handbag was vibrating. Oh, the lamp! I put it on the ground, watching in awe as the fortune demon-cum-genie appeared in a puff of smoke.

He brushed himself down. “Cor, you wanna try being magically scrunched up like that. It plays merry havoc with yer...” He noticed Harry and I staring. “Oh, I mean...” He cleared his throat and put on an accent. “Your wish is my command, O mistress.”

“No, wait!” I held out my hands, panicking that my wish was about to be purposely misinterpreted - and I’d end up inside a random building on the other side of the world. But actually, as the magic swooshed and rippled, a neon arrow popped into existence over a building up ahead.

I eyed-up the genie, who was looking pleased with himself. “Et vol-au-vent,” he said proudly.

“Er, did you?” I asked, frowning.

“I think he might mean et voila,” Harry spoke loudly and clearly to the fortune demon, like a Brit abroad.
