Chapter 35

Kamil laughed at himself. He scooped up his knife and returned it to its sheath. His prey had beaten Stiggs. He had already been informed of it. He should have calculated that his prey would have absorbed Stiggs’ ability.

He shook his head and pulled out a small device from a pouch attached to his belt. It was an explosive device. Covered in plastic, it looked like a toy. This aided in masking the sizable amount of C-4 stuffed within. He pressed a tiny round button on the rear of it that caused a red light to blink.

Below he saw the body float underneath the waters of the clear, blue pool. He had likely awake any moment. He doubted this would be a kill blow but it was worth the shot. Kamil tossed the plastic devise out the window and watched as it descended on its unsuspecting target.

He heard only words and saw only blackness.

“Tell me.”

“We’re made to serve God and country.” The voice was his.

“And who is God?”

“Our commanding officer.”

“Now, recite for me the Creed.”

“It is my duty to my country to defend it against all enemies.”

“Go on.”

“I am in service to my God, my Commanding Officer, who empowers me to enact vengeance on any who threaten my country.”

“And?”

“My will is iron, my heart coal, and my mind fixated on a single purpose: For God & Country. Let the enemies of my country tremble in fear. I’ll bring judgment down on their heads. For God & Country.”

“What if you break the creed?”

“To break the creed equals death.”

“Yes, indeed. Breaking the creed equals death and makes you a dead man walking.”

David’s eyes snapped open. He was underwater and needed oxygen, but his mind was clouded. And his body started to throb with immense pain. That’s when he saw the plastic blinking device float near his head. He stared at it for a moment in wonder. His lungs burned as did his eyes. He was exhausted.

The blinking device was a bomb.

David shook off the fogginess and fought desperately to reach the surface. He grabbed hold of the side of the pool and yanked himself out of the water. He was halfway out when a powerful force knocked him face-first into the cement below. Water rose high into the air and David was flung into a pool chair.

David laid motionless on the ground for a minute as his body begged him to quit. He had to resist giving in. He had to push on. The man. That’s right. There was a man in the house and he was dangerous. David had to get out of here.

David tried to rise to his feet but crumpled under the pain coming from his left thigh. He was covered in scrapes, cuts, and gashes. Little pieces of glass had embedded themselves into his skin like shrapnel. But his thigh was gushing out blood. For whatever reason, he wasn’t healing as fast as he had earlier. He could barely limp, much less make a run for it. He was already lightheaded.
