THE MORNING SHIFT WAS A BLUR. We were slammed from the moment I opened the doors. At first I thought it was coincidence, and then I realized everybody was swarming the central gossip location because they wanted information on Fred... and they thought I might have it.

“I heard it was aliens,” Lilith Montgomery said, her eyes wide as she sipped her coffee. “Did Hunter mention anything about aliens?”

“He definitely didn’t mention aliens,” I assured her. “I think you’re safe.”

“I hope so.” She was solemn. “Everybody thinks it would be cool to hang out with aliens—like they’re all E.T. or something—but I know better.” She tapped the side of her head for emphasis. “I know that we’d be getting the aliens from that Tom Cruise movie where they suck us up and use our blood to garden. Nobody is getting E.T.”

“I will keep that in mind.” I flashed a smile I didn’t feel and then disappeared into the kitchen. I was hoping for a moment of respite. Instead, I heard raised voices coming from the back aisle, where the dishwasher row was set up. When I crossed to that area, I found Tillie facing off with Grandpa... and my entire world threatened to crumble.

“I think you’re being unreasonable.” Tillie sounded completely practical as she regarded my grandfather. I knew better, though. She had mischief in her eyes. “I’m just here to talk to your granddaughter for a few minutes. I have no intention of dragging you into the woods and leaving you there to die.”

Exasperated, I elbowed past Grandpa and made sure there was plenty of distance between him and Tillie. “What’s up, guys?” I tried to keep my voice light, but it was difficult.

“This... person... let herself into my kitchen,” Grandpa replied on a growl. “She just let herself in. She had your cat with her too.”

Well, that was interesting. Krankle had been asleep on the couch when I came downstairs to start my shift. There had been no reason to leave the door open at the time, so I hadn’t bothered. Now I had to wonder how he’d gotten out... and hooked up with Tillie, for that matter. It wasn’t as if he had a phone to communicate with her.

“Um...”

“I just wanted you to know I was in town.” Tillie’s expression reminded me of a ray of sunshine. Sadly, I knew storm clouds were brewing below. She always had ulterior motives.

“Does your family know you’re in town?” I queried.

She pinned me with a warning look. “I don’t answer to my family.”

“I know but... Bay was upset last night. She seemed to think you hadn’t checked in with your nieces all day.”

“So?” Tillie’s eyes flashed with belligerent intent. “They’re not the bosses of me. At all. I’m the boss of me.” She thumped her chest for emphasis. “I don’t need babysitters. We went over this last night.”

“I would never insinuate you need a babysitter,” I replied automatically. “I just thought you might want to take a breather today.”

“Not when there’s a new supervillain in town,” she replied.
