CENTRAL MAUI
Locals come here in droves for their monthly Costco run or to catch the latest flick at Queen Kaahumanu Center or Maui Mall, but Central Maui can also be an ideal shopping destination for visiting families who are passing time on their way to or from the airport.
KAHULUI
CLOTHING
Fodor’sChoice Hi-Tech. Stop here immediately after deplaning to stock up on surf trunks, windsurfing gear, bikinis, or sundresses. You can also rent a surfboard or sign up for windsurfing or kiteboarding lessons while you’re at it. You’ll find additional branches in Kihei and Paia. 425 Koloa St., Kahului 808/877–2111 www.surfmaui.com.
FOOD
Maui Coffee Roasters. The best stop on Maui for Kona and Island coffees is this café and roasting house near Kahului Airport. Salespeople give good advice and will ship items, and you even get a free cup of joe in a signature to-go cup when you buy a pound of coffee. 444 Hana Hwy., Kahului 808/877–2877 www.mauicoffeeroasters.com.
MARKETS
Maui Swap Meet. Crafts, souvenirs that range from authentic to generic, fruit, shells, and aloha attire make this flea market in a college parking lot the island’s biggest bargain. Maui’s food trucks and freshly cracked coconuts are an added draw. Off Kahului Beach Rd., Kahului 808/244–3100 www.mauiexposition.com 50¢.
SHOPPING CENTERS
Maui Mall. Longs Drugs and Whole Foods anchor the mall, and there’s a decent ramen house, Oritsu Ramen. Cult fave Tasaka Guri Guri Shop is also here—it’s been around for more than a hundred years, selling an ice cream–like confection called guri guri. The mall also has a whimsically designed 12-screen megaplex. 70 E. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului 808/877–8952 www.mauimall.com.
Maui Marketplace. On the busy stretch of Dairy Road, this behemoth mall near Kahului Airport couldn’t be more conveniently located. The 20-acre complex houses several outlet stores and big retailers, such as Pier One Imports, Sports Authority, and Old Navy. Sample local and ethnic cuisines at the Kau Kau Corner food court. 270 Dairy Rd., Kahului 808/873–0400 www.mauimarketplacehi.com.
Puunene Shopping Center. This relatively new strip mall near the Kahului Airport is anchored by Target (which includes a Starbucks inside). Other retailers include Maui Tacos, Starbucks, and the popular farm-to-table takeout joint Fork & Salad. Corner of Maui Veterans Hwy. and Hookele St., Kahului.
Queen Kaahumanu Center. Maui’s largest shopping center has more than 100 stores and restaurants, a movie theater, and a food court. The mall’s interesting rooftop, composed of a series of manta ray–like umbrella shades, is easily spotted. Stop at Camellia Seeds for what locals call “crack seed,” a snack made from dried fruits, or swing by 180 Boardshop for Hawaii-based streetwear like 808 All Day or In4mation. For surf-inspired gear, stop by Local Motion and Shapers. Other stops include mall standards such as Macy’s, Pacific Sunwear, and American Eagle Outfitters. Beyond retail therapy, the mall also hosts a creative lineup of events throughout the month, including a farmers’ market, live music, and car shows. 275 W. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului 808/877–3369 www.queenkaahumanucenter.com.
WAILUKU
ARTS AND CRAFTS
Fodor’sChoice Mele Ukulele. For a professional-quality, authentic ukulele, skip the souvenir shops. Mele’s handcrafted beauties are made of koa or mahogany and strung and finished by the store’s owner, Michael Rock.
