At this early stage you should be watching for anything that doesn’t seem normal, perhaps a crooked leg or if the foal doesn’t seem to be suckling regularly. Remember, if you’re not sure, check the mare’s udder, because at this time it should not be fat and full. The foal should be nursing regularly so that the udder is constantly being drained and refilling. The first four days or so after birth are the most critical, as this is when any major problems will become evident. Some conditions associated with neurological issues may not manifest immediately after birth, but the foal will seem to have normal behavior for the first few hours before being struck with convulsions or other symptoms. Many times a foal with these problems can be saved and hopefully with no lasting damage, provided that immediate action is taken. This is most definitely not a time to go with “Let’s see if it gets better in a few hours!” Another issue you may notice, particularly in Thoroughbred foals, is that the pastern joints are very weak, often to the point of the fetlocks touching the ground. Normally this will resolve itself quite quickly (within the first day or so) but if it doesn’t, you guessed it, call the vet!
