The sun was low in the sky when Milli left her home, hopping into the car without a second thought. Her mind was on Karan and Karan alone. She needed him now more than ever and he had invited her over just in her time of need. The clouds were tinged with orange and pink. It was a beautiful evening in Chandigarh, all cantaloupe-coloured light and the earliest spray of stars winking in the sky. The shadows grew longer, coating the world around her in hazy twilight by the time she pulled up in front of a mansion larger than anything she had ever seen.
Her GPS told her she was at the right place but even her GPS sometimes made mistakes. She had understood that Karan was rich. His outlook on life, his taste in food, his spontaneous airline adventure that had landed him in Paris had all clued her in early to the fact that they were definitely from different economic classes. However, it hadnât bothered her because his mind and his passion drew her in far more than his finances ever could. But now, gazing at what must be his home, she was a little blindsided.
Rich to her meant expensive wine and shiny watches. The home she was looking at wasnât just two storeys worth of new money and an outdoor pool. It was a palace, an estate with rolling fields that looked to Milli like heaven on earth. This wasnât just a nice salary and a fitted suit. This was wealth and power, true and intoxicating. It frightened Milli a little. She looked down at her pilled sun dress and checked her messy hair in the rear-view mirror. She was no pampered beauty queen. Would she even fit in this beautiful home?
But Karan had seen something in her that had caught his eye like no glittering diamond or precious metal ever had. He had made it clear to Milli with everything he had said and done for her that he found her far more beautiful than the swans in his pond or the glittering gate marking the entrance to his estate. He had treated her with nothing but respect all the days they had known each other.
It was obvious to Milli now, gazing at his incredible estate, just how much he truly valued her. She was more valuable to Karan than all the jewels and wealth of the world. His appraisal of her worth was just Karan being honest. By now, Milli had got a brief idea that Karan had known nothing but wealth for all of his life. A man of hard work and great reward, of first class plane tickets and expensive cologne, found Milli to be indispensable. That he had grown up among all this opulence and found her the most valuable thing in all of his life warmed her heart.
She hesitated for only a moment before pressing the call button on the gate. There was a long, pleasant buzz before a fuzzy voice on the other end of the line answered.
