Although they’re old-fashioned, snake guides remain popular among fly-rod builders. Snakes come in at least eight sizes. Shown here are a size 1/0, about the smallest you would use on the tip of an ultralight fly rod, and a size 6, which you might use on the lower half of a saltwater stick.

Conventional tip-tops come in several sizes. A standard-sized top is okay on a 6-weight or lighter freshwater rod. On a 7-weight or heavier rod, use a large or extra-large tip-top. Like snake guides, tip-tops are made with a number of finishes.
