WHITE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL FOREST
WILD RIVER WILDERNESS AREA
The WILD RIVER is the center of activity in this section of the White Mountain National Forest. It is one of those rivers that has changed quite a bit over the years. Between catastrophic weather events and the introduction of non-native rainbow trout by the State of Maine, the Wild River is a shadow of its former self. In years gone by, we would park at the campground and hike up the Wild River trail to the Spruce Brook tenting area. This would be our base of operations. From this area, we had plenty of feeder brooks and beaver flowages to fish, and the brook trout fishing was nonstop.
Maine began an intensive program of stocking rainbow trout in the Androscoggin River in the 1980s. The rainbow trout began to hold over and inhabit the Wild River. Soon anglers were catching wild rainbow trout in the Wild River. Anglers were intrigued by the new species, which were often wild. The State of New Hampshire received this feedback and started to stock the Wild River with rainbow trout. Now the die was cast. As rainbow trout held over and reproduced, they moved up the Wild River and into the native brook trout habitat. Needless to say, the brook trout, as they do in all Appalachian Mountain streams, are losing the turf war with the rainbow trout.
A second dagger to the native brook trout was Hurricane Irene. This 2011 hurricane destroyed miles and miles of vital trout habitat on the Wild River. It will take a very long time for the Wild River to recover from this devastation.
