CHAPTER 18

Marsha

John decided he needed a break from writing “to walk and think.”

I understand. I think best when I’m walking, too. But I didn’t want to think too much today. Klaus and I needed to look around and sniff.

We headed down our street, scanning for gray cats, bicycles, and hamsters. Nothing but gardens and elm trees so far. We turned onto the section of Pride Street that had cherry trees. I dodged the fallen fruit. They hurt my paws. Klaus tried to eat one once, and almost choked on the hard pit.

That meant I also had to go to the vet because John and Garrett were both so worried about the dang fluff ball they both had to go, and Garrett insisted I come along “just in case,” even though I wasn’t the one with a pink stain around my mouth from cherry juice.

“Do you see that?” Klaus barked.

All I saw was Princess Sparkle Toes. She looked around, a huge pair of sunglasses covering half her face. It seemed like she saw us, but then she turned and stepped under a green striped awning, heading into the little grocery store where John sometimes bought a can of Coke. “Contraband,” he called it. “Don’t tell Garrett.”

I didn’t understand what he meant. Sure, I thought soda was disgusting, but humans ate and drank a lot of disgusting things. But I kept his secret, anyway.

“That was Sparkle Toes,” I said. “So?”

“She had a pink plastic purse, just like the one Ron described!”

“The kind with breathing holes for her hamster?”

“Yes!”

I had been so sure Mr. Cheeks was dead… but what exactly had I smelled in his cage? And if he wasn’t dead, why had Sparkle Toes said he was?

I pulled on my leash and broke into a run, causing John to shout in surprise. I didn’t care. We had to get to the shop before Sparkle Toes left.

“What are you two doing?” John yelled. “Slow down!”

I didn’t pause. I knew John could keep up. Unlike Garrett, John went running almost every day. That meant he could keep up with Klaus and me. It also meant his muscles were hard, so he was a little less comfy to sit on than Garrett, but that was okay. I loved John anyway.

I yelped as my front paw hit a cherry but kept going. I was determined to not let this clue get away.

Klaus and I barreled toward the green stripes of At Your Convenience, though the new ache in my paw slowed me down a bit. At least the cherry wasn’t embedded between my foot pads. That was the worst.

We pulled to a stop, looking up at the heavy glass door and the windows that displayed what looked like dancing potato chips. The owner changed the windows every month, and they were always kind of weird. The humans liked them, though, so I guess they worked.

“You want to go into At Your Convenience? Why in the world? Tracy doesn’t have dog treats.”

I barked. “Princess Sparkle Toes is inside!”

John sighed.
