Getting from A to B

Old Town Trolley, tel.305-296-6688. If you've never been to Key West before, take the Old Town Trolley before you do anything else. The $29 narrated tour leaves from Mallory Square and makes 10 stops as it goes through most of town. You can get on and off all you like. If you see something that grabs your interest, hop off at the next stop. When you're ready, jump on any of the trolleys going by. This will keep your feet from hurting.

Old Town Trolley guides are locals who point out their favorite restaurants and tell you who is playing at Sloppy Joe's. Trolleys can handle handicapped passengers. The Conch Train is very touristy, but it's still a good way to get a comfortable introduction to the sights and sounds of the city. When I was a small child I thought this was the height of adventure. To enjoy your ride, remember who you are - a tourist - and go ahead and let yourself be an unembarrassed one. You don't have to tell your pals back in Carbondale you went on the Conch Train, but you'll be able to tell about some interesting Key West trivia you learned on the tour. Hop on the 90-minute narrated tour at 601 Duval Street, tel.305-294-5161, www.conchtrain.com. This is a good way to see parts of the city you would never find or hear about on your own. Tours run from 9 to 4:30 every day of the year and cost $29.
