CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Money, safely secured, Charli felt better about focusing on readying her property for potential buyers. Mike and Sandy Carney were scheduled to view it Monday, leaving enough time to finish drywall and paint. She applied tape and mud to seams then worked on another project. By the time she returned from her lunchtime stroll, it would be ready to sand and be coated with another layer.

She asked the few people she met if they’d noticed anyone coming or going the night of her vandalism. No one admitted to seeing a thing.

She completed her day, giving patches another coat and sanding. One more the following morning and she could spend the afternoon painting.

Eli’s radio echoed from inside his place, as she hopped into her truck and left. Luckily, they hadn’t talked in a couple days. She wasn’t ready to confide what she’d found—or certain she would.

After dinner she tossed hoops with Kyler, helped Gran with dishes then curled into a corner of the couch with a book. Kyler worked on an assignment at the bar.

Her phone pinged. Jaiden’s face appeared on screen. She accepted the call and jumped to her feet, sauntering toward privacy of her bedroom. “Hey, gal, did you learn anything?”

Jaiden’s soft voice and sultry twang helped ease fluttering critters trying to beat their way out of Charli’s belly. “Yep, sure enough did. The cash wasn’t stolen. The random bills you sent were printed different years, all before 1962. You said they’re non-sequential, so I figure they weren’t from a bank robbery. They don’t show up anywhere in the system. It appears no one is looking for this money.”

Biting her upper lip, she sighed. “Maybe not, but someone didn’t want it found. I’d assumed they bank robbery theory was a bust. Bills are worn but in good shape.”

“Maybe the owner hid his retirement savings. Stranger things happen.”

Charli exhaled air she’d been holding. “I suppose. Since they’re that old, it rules out the Bradfords. Their story is gory enough. The first owners of the house were the Sandbornes. Perhaps Joe Sandborne was afraid of banks and died without telling heirs he’d stashed it.”

It was possible. A twinge in the back of Charli’s mind hinted otherwise. There was more to the Sandbornes than met the eye. They bore further investigation, but the idea of doing it all alone scared the hell out of Charli.

The Sandbornes’ questionable heritage haunted her, as did Hilary Brown-Sandbornes’ link to the Syndicate. Were both families involved in organized crime? Charli didn’t know much about the era when they were flamboyantly brutal and obvious with their control of certain cities, only what she’d learned from Eli and Mrs. Macy, but she had a sneaky suspicion she was about to become well-educated on The Mob, The Syndicate, The Outfit, or The Cleveland Mob—whatever the hell they were called.

Researching online, she’d learned The Cleveland Mob ruled powerfully in Newport, Kentucky between the 1920s and 1978, and Hilary’s family was involved with them. Newport and Covington, where Hilary was born, were teeming with mobster activity.
