United Airlines #4068

The layover at the Morgantown Municipal Airport was a mere twenty minutes, for deplaning and boarding only. Those of us continuing on stayed in our seats while the plane idled.

Outside, passengers descended the staircase and milled about, waiting for their bags, already shouting into their cell phones over the engines’ roar. The flight attendant walked through the cabin and asked us if we’d care for anything to drink. Whiskey, I wanted to say. Make mine a double.

“Just water, please.”

I pulled out my phone. The urge to text Jon was already fading, as though I’d entered another realm, another dimension, where time and space weren’t quite the same, where Jon himself was just a magical story I’d told myself in a faraway land—a prince, a mirage, a sweet fever dream. I slipped the phone back in my bag.

Soon the new passengers were boarding, and the little plane groaned its way up into the air once more. Our flight would be short, a mere hop, so our cruising altitude stayed low, hovering just above the mountains.

Below us unspooled fold after lovely fold of dark-green land, fertile and forested, occasionally gashed by a strip mine. Now and then, a runoff pond’s waters glowed a sick opal.
