Jade and Juno arrived in the dirt cavern. Torches were lit along the walls as Juno had remembered. With a great deal of care, he placed Kevin down on a bed in one of the empty rooms and rushed to the main corridor, nearly stumbling over one of the people Topetine had been having coffee with the morning they were swept away to follow Kevin and Sara into the depths of the cenote.

“What’s happened?” the little woman asked, flattening her palms against her long skirt. “Where is the guardian?”

“Follow me. We need your help or that of a J-Man,” Juno answered. He wasn’t going to tell her that his cargo was not Topetine for fear she wouldn’t follow him. Before the woman could answer, Juno had turned and rushed in the direction he’d left Kevin and Jade.

As she entered, the woman’s gaze crossed over Jade and narrowed before resting on Kevin’s lifeless form sprawled on his back. “What’s happened to him?”

“The villagers were going to sacrifice him. He’s been beaten badly and...”

“No, no, no.” The woman waved her hands. “I can’t help you. Not in this.” She began to back out of the room but stopped as Juno stepped closer.

“What do you mean? He’s part of the quest. He not only protects the Light Carrier but the guardian.”

“She means she can’t intervene because he was already decided for the sacrifice,” Jade said.

“He bears the mark in honor of the Gods.” The woman pointed to a branding above Kevin’s heart in the shape of a cross with an ‘X’ through it. In the center was a swirled pattern. “He’s untouchable.”

“That’s ridiculous.” Juno leaned closer to her. “The mark was put there by cursed villagers.”

The woman only shook her head.

“You’ll help see that he lives or more will die, understand?”

Jade stepped between them and began speaking another language Juno was not familiar with. When the woman nodded, he said a few more words before she rushed off.

“What? Is she getting help?”

“Yes. The J-Man you wanted.”

“Just tell me you didn’t promise her something undeliverable.”

“I didn’t have to. For one, her people believe the J-Man is the only person that can intervene with health when the mark of the Gods is placed upon the skin. And two, I told her that her Gods would not be happy if the life of the guardian was put at greater risk with his death.” He jerked a thumb in Kevin’s direction.

“Good.” Juno turned and bent over Kevin. “He’s still breathing, but I don’t know for how long. I hope you didn’t scare her into taking off.”

“Nah. She probably thinks the Gods would be angry with her if she could’ve done something and didn’t. That’s what scared her to get the J-man. Trust me. She wouldn’t risk the hell that she believes would come to her.”

Both turned their gaze to the sound of footsteps and the appearance of the painted man in the doorway.

“She was quick,” Juno said in surprise.

“Fear has a way of doing that.” Jade shifted his weight against the wall and crossed his arms.
