Thirty-eight

Amy left the washroom and went to sit on the chair outside Krucik’s empty office. Her new theories were concerning, but they had given her hope she could hold on to: hope that Ben hadn’t drowned in the river. She started to relax.

“Hello, Amy.”

She looked up at the sound of Krucik’s voice and stood up to meet him as he approached her in the corridor.

“Hi, Detective Krucik, do you have a minute? I found something connected to the investigation that you might want to see.”

“Of course.” Krucik opened the door to his office and waved her in. “Please take a seat. I hope you didn’t have to wait long.” He sat down behind his desk.

“Not at all.” Amy sat down with the computer on her lap.

“So, what did you want me to see?”

Amy told him about the incoming message she’d heard from Ben’s computer the night he disappeared. That she’d been busy at the time and ignored it, being used to him sending work home.

“Then, last night, I remembered and went to have a look. I found an email. I looked at it and knew you’d like to see what I found.”

“All right. Let’s have a look.”

Amy opened the laptop to the photo of the will and turned it around to face Krucik. “You might know why he took this picture. It looks like it’s taken in an office.”

Krucik examined the picture. “It does,” he mumbled.

“And this…” Amy reached over and clicked through to the next image, showing the research page about perilous asthma combos. “I’m guessing Ben found this on Mark Sokalsky’s laptop. Look at the date.”

Krucik examined the web page, fingering the birthmark on his forehead. “Hmm.”

“Next, you’ll see a list of names, numbers, and dates.” Amy said, clicking to the next photo. “I don’t know the significance of it, but Ben must have thought it was important enough to take a photo of and send it to himself.”

“Hmm,” Krucik said again. “Looks like a gambling score sheet,” he mumbled to himself. He examined it in silence.

“What’s a gambling score sheet?”

“A statement showing who owes how much, when, and where. Someone using that laptop could be involved in an illegal gambling operation.”

“Is it a betting list?”

“Not exactly. This is about gambling money owed. On a score sheet, the number 500 might really mean 50,000… Likely, as they add zeroes. The dates could mean when payments are due.” He looked up at Amy. “I’d like to show this to Inspector Koskinen. Do you mind?”

“No. I don’t mind.”

Krucik picked up his desk phone, pushed a button, and spoke to Koskinen, telling him that Amy had brought something in that he’d probably like to see.

A moment later, Koskinen walked in. “Hello Amy.” He gave her a tight-lipped smile. “I hope you’re feeling better today.”

“I am, thank you.”

Koskinen eyed the laptop. “You have something to show me?”

“Amy brought this in,” Krucik said, turning the laptop to face Koskinen. “Ben sent these photos from the Sokalsky residence the night he disappeared.”

Koskinen had a quick look at the will, then clicked through the other images.
