Chapter 5

Ahmalee

After we close up the store for the day, I take the familiar drive to my home – my Knightdale home – a place I miss more than I thought I would. Although I’ve done it too many times to count, I miss this drive from the store to home. The mundane, routine activities that I used to do day-in and day-out are what I miss the most. Honestly, I never expected to feel this way and it’s in no way a knock on my love and commitment to Cain. It’s just the way I feel.

I turn on the street, eager to see my house. I was tempted to stop by there before I reached the store, but Percy was driving me and I didn’t want to be a bother by asking him to make multiple stops. It could wait. Plus, he had arranged to have a car brought to the store to cover the duration of my stay – a little overkill if you ask me because I could’ve just driven myself to Knightdale from Charlotte, but Cain wasn’t having it. He’s super protective of me now that I’m his.

I pass my old neighbor’s white picket fences, see black cows grazing in the field. And then I see my house. A smile comes to my face when I get closer to the house because Cain is sitting on the steps. Or is he? Wow! Am I so in love with him that I’ve pictured him here? Am I dreaming? Imagining things?

No, I’m not dreaming. He’s here. Cain’s here!

I park the Range Rover that Percy rented for me and waste no time getting out. Cain stands, all six-foot-three of him, and my heart skips a beat. He has on a black suit paired with a gray shirt and an all-black, loosened necktie. His shirt is unbuttoned three buttons down. He looks tired. I’m honestly surprised he’s here after working all day.

I walk over to him – just like old times. I don’t ask him what he’s doing here. I don’t say a word. I just throw my arms around him and hold on.

He breathes. It sounds like a sigh of relief and says, “Mmm, my baby.”

I allow his aura, his scent, to dissolve inside of me. I feel like our love is on a different plane here. Something in the air is electric and reassuring. It tells me he’s my forever person. I know that already, but this is the reminder.

When I release him, he says, “I didn’t think you would be happy to see me.”

“Huh? I’m always happy to see you, Cain.”

Holding my hands, his eyes dig deep into mine when he says, “I know you are, but I feel like things have been off with us recently.”

“Why do you feel that way?” I ask. I thought I was doing a good job of hiding my feelings from him.

“I called you today. Texted you. I didn’t get a response.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I completely forgot. I was so busy at the store and—”

Never mind that.
