If you could take one big breath and ask, “Is there a man-eating tiger in front of me? Or is someone holding a gun on me?” you’d realize that you were simply on overload. Your fear is out of proportion to the current event. It’s much like cranking up the volume on a sound system: In a high-quality system, the speakers can handle it; with an inferior system, the speakers will blow out.

Giving yourself a reality check by asking questions about what’s really going on will help you step out of the fear and into present-moment time. Skip this step and you’ll find yourself experiencing an anxiety attack, hyperventilating, or breathing into a brown paper bag . . . and often seeing yourself as defective for feeling that way.

How many times in your life have you thought, I may not make it through this? Well, you did made it through! The proof is that you’re here, reading this book. The only reason you’re feeling the fear again is because you haven’t dealt with it yet. Overload is simply your body’s way of trying to tell you, “You’ve held this in for a long time. Listen up, you’re not going to die here—you’ve just been given a chance to deal with this thing.” In fact, a lot of times, a fear level of ten is just a huge opportunity for your spirit to say, “It’s time to heal this. You’ve postponed this long enough, so it’s time to enhance the quality of your life. Get this out of the way so that the flames don’t burn up everything in sight.”

You don’t have to feel this way over and over again. All it takes to end the cycle is your willingness to address the situation. Every day, you wake up with the ability to ask yourself, “How do I want life to be today? And what amI going to do about it?”Willingness interrupts the cycle and lets you heal. Life will still go around and come around, but just like that tire I mentioned in Step 1, it doesn’t have to go flat this time. It can roll along more smoothly when you quantify the fear and take the steps toward healing.
