Walking into Abigail’s house felt like coming home. The air smelled of cinnamon and sugar with a touch of quality coffee. And bacon. Apparently, their hostess had pulled out all the stops for this meeting.

“I’m in the kitchen. I thought we’d eat in here.” Abigail called out as they walked into the house.

Trent led the way to the kitchen, but he didn’t need to. Mia could have just followed her nose. If she’d ever had any doubt about leaving Mia’s Morsels in Abigail’s hands, this morning was proving that Mia had been right. Abigail loved food just as much as Mia did.

“Mom, you should keep the door locked. Especially when Dad’s not here.” Trent walked over and gave his mother a kiss on the cheek. Levi followed him. “You need to think about safety.”

“We have the alarm on the front gate. I knew you guys were here, so I went and unlocked the door. If I don’t lock it, your dad locks it remotely and I get a call.” She squeezed his cheek. “Stop worrying about me. I’ve been a grownup longer than you’ve been alive. Good morning, Mia, and Christina. Where’s Mary Alice?”

“Grans decided to stay at the apartment. She wanted to work on some spells.” Mia glanced at Christina who nodded. “Since we still have the engagement ring, we thought we might be able to reach Todd’s spirit if he’s still around and see what he can tell us.”

Abigail glanced over at her youngest son. Then she brought a basket of muffins to the table. “I hope she’s taking precautions this time with the cats. I hate to see Todd’s soul get caught up in one of the kittens. I don’t think he’d handle it as well as Dorian has so far. Humans all expect to be in a line to get into the pearly gates when their souls pass. Getting stuck in a cat’s body might not be Todd’s version of heaven.”

“Or a dog. Muffy’s at the apartment too,” Christina reminded Mia.

Mia sat down at the table. “Don’t worry about it. Grans told me she’s locking herself into the kitchen and doing the spell work there. Mr. Darcy and Dorian are in charge of the kittens and Muffy. Also, she kind of already sent him away with a spell the first night after he died. I’m hoping he’s not around still.”

Abigail set a plate of bacon and sausages on the table as well as a bowl of scrambled eggs and another filled with Southern hash browns. “We’ll just be optimistic then. Come on everyone. Let’s eat and feed our brains. We need to figure out this problem.”

“Yes, before Baldwin sends me to jail for hating the guy.” Levi sat and patted the chair next to him. “Come sit by me, Christina. Maybe we could get side by side cells. That way, we’d still have each other.”

“I don’t think it works that way,” Mia laughed as she sat next to Trent on the other side of the table. “Abigail, this all looks wonderful.
