Athletics, whether on the varsity level or for recreation, are tops on anyone’s list here. The school began competing in the uber-competitive Southeastern Conference in 2012 and made an impressive debut by racking up several conference wins and defeating top-ranked Alabama in the process. Football fans rock Kyle Field with cries of “Gig ’em, Aggies,” or “Hump it, Ags.” After touchdowns are scored, Aggie fans kiss their dates, and the annual game against the University of Texas stirs up the Aggies and their fans all season long. Men’s baseball routinely fields outstanding teams, and the women’s golf and soccer teams have brought home a few championships of their own. The women’s gymnastics club has won multiple national titles. The well-organized and extensive intramural program includes hundreds of softball teams. Tennis has become a popular sport as well, along with flag football, basketball, and soccer. Aggie jokes abound, much to the chagrin of A&M students, who don’t take too kindly to being the object of ridicule. Example: “How do you get a one-armed Aggie out of a tree?” “Wave.”
