14 Houndfish

Bob and I could hear them hollering excitedly from their nearby boat anchored within a long cast of the famous bird racks in the Florida Gulf waters south of Homosassa.

“I’ve got one,” Mark kept repeating, a bit louder with each jump, and Gene, professional guide or not, sounded just as excited, echoing, “Me, too! Me, too!”

Their foes were solidly hooked. Mark’s took off on a grey-hounding run aiming for Mexico. Gene’s started in the opposite direction with a powerful bonefish-type charge. Then both fish catapulted into the air doing back flips and reversed directions. Their lines began rooster-tailing through the water on a collision course.

Bob and I envisioned a beautiful mess if the fish crossed lines, but the angling gods were smiling on Mark and Gene. The fish changed directions again, halted the power runs, and began a series of aerial maneuvers few fish can match.

Up they went, twisting briefly into pretzel shapes, only to land with violent splashes, remaining in the water just long enough to get momentum for another leap. The fireworks were brief but violent. Finally they began to tire. Mark and Gene brought their prizes aboard and then released them.

Untangling their leaders and putting another strip of mullet on their hooks, they flipped their baits towards the bird racks and zowie! they were back in action. The show was startling, and suddenly Bob and I realized we’d been content to be spectators on the first round.
