Chapter 6
After another month of practice and learning Chelsea’s complicated style of play, Adrian was ready to go. The team itself was far tougher and more brutal than his home team of Cruz Azul. They threw elbows, pushed, and sometimes intentionally aimed to hurt the opposing players. He didn’t know how to feel about it, but because of his outsider position, Adrian had to play along. Going back home without making his mark in a soccer town like London was not an option. Adrian was there to play. He was there to win.
As Adrian stretched in the Chelsea locker room, he could hear the distant roar of the fans. He wondered if Phoebe was in the stands with her brother. They texted back and forth over the month, but because of his busy schedule, trying to get up to speed, Adrian was unable to see her. Always the understandable one, Phoebe told him not to worry about it. Adrian wished that she would text to let him know that she came but, he hasn’t heard from her in a couple days.
Peter, whose locker is next to his, noticed Adrian’s glazed look.
“You ready mate? This is the big day.”
"Huh?" Adrian said, startled. "Oh, yes. Very ready."
“You thinking about that girl, huh?” Peter asked sheepishly.
“No,” Adrian lied. “Just nervous.”
“She’ll be here,” Peter reassured him. “Just think about the game, and all will follow." He laughed, shaking his head. "Listen to me...I'm like a monk or something."
The soccer field that night was more than a soccer field. It was an event. Energy poured from the stands onto Adrian and the rest of the team. He had never felt such power. It was as if the momentum was infused in his body. The grass, the air, the booming cheers overwhelmed Adrian. This was where he belonged.
Off the field, Phoebe walked to her assigned seats from the tickets Adrian left at the box office. They were in the family and friend box seat. Thomas, Phoebe's brother, was a skinny sheepish man at 30 years old, bursting with excitement. He couldn't believe her sister's luck and that she actually wanted to take him to a game. Phoebe loathed soccer, but Thomas could tell there was a secret reason she wouldn't tell him, that she wanted to go. Thomas egged her on as they were ushered to their seat.
“So tell me, sister," Thomas teased. "What's the real reason we're here?"
“Because I’m the best big sister in the world," she said, scanning the field trying to find Adrian, "And I love my twin brother very much."
“You know how I can tell you’re lying...” Thomas chuckled.
"How?" Phoebe asked, still looking.
“Because you haven’t taken your eyes off the field since we got here.”
Phoebe smacked Thomas playfully on the arm. “Stop you!”
“What position does he play?” Asked Thomas. “I can help you find him that way.”
“Oh my gosh,” blushed Phoebe. “I have no idea. He’s moderately sized, obviously strong, with a beautiful smile but sensitive, I think. He's very shy..."
Thomas stared at Phoebe, stunned.
